Null Ritual¶
The institutionalised practice of mechanically executing a null hypothesis significance test — nil-null, p-value, p < .05 verdict — severed from the alternatives, priors, effect sizes, and decision context inference requires, yet retaining full editorial authority as if it had not been.
Core Idea¶
The null ritual, named by Gigerenzer (2004), is the institutionalised practice of mechanically executing a null hypothesis significance test — nil-null, p-value, p < .05 threshold, binary reject/retain verdict — without engaging the alternatives, priors, effect sizes, or decision context that inference is supposed to serve. The tested procedure is itself an anomalous hybrid welding Fisher's evidential p-value to Neyman–Pearson's two-hypothesis decision rule, and the splice quietly discards both halves' safeguards.
Scope of Application¶
The null ritual lives wherever null hypothesis significance testing is the editorial-default inference apparatus of scientific publishing; its reach is bounded by that substrate.
- Psychology — Gigerenzer's original turf, where the bulk of documented cases live.
- Biomedical research — Ioannidis's account of why most published findings are false rests on the same detached procedure.
- Econometrics — McCloskey and Ziliak's "cult of statistical significance."
- Ecology and environmental science — Anderson, Burnham, and Thompson's critique of ritualized testing.
- Educational research and social-policy evaluation — NHST as the default inference language.
- Machine-learning benchmark evaluation — significance bars on metric deltas without effect-size context.
Clarity¶
Naming the null ritual locates the disease precisely: not that significance testing is wrong, but that the procedure has been severed from the reasoning it was built to serve while keeping its authority. It binds a scattered list of bad habits into one diagnosis and explains why reform keeps failing — the ritual is institutionally enforced, not a comprehension failure.
Manages Complexity¶
A miscellaneous bill of complaints collapses into one structural diagnosis, checkable with a single question: was an inference actually made here? And the reform space partitions along one coordinate — does an intervention restructure editorial incentives or merely correct understanding? — from which efficacy reads off, so cures need not be tried one by one.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept licenses a diagnostic test of whether an inference was made, a cognitive-versus-institutional cause attribution that predicts which reforms bite, a historical-decomposition move deriving the missing safeguards from the hybrid's construction, and a boundary-drawing move separating detached execution from both legitimate testing and active gaming.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within NHST-based publishing the ritual transfers as mechanism across every field sharing that apparatus, its diagnostics and cures traveling exactly as far as the furniture is in place. Beyond it, form-without-function sustained by institutional enforcement is the parent prime cargo_cult (with Goodhart's_law and legibility as kin). Calling a hollow corporate audit "a null ritual" is analogy; the NHST machinery stays home.

-
Null Ritual is a kind of Ritual Prime
The Null Ritual is a prescribed, recurrent, socially enforced symbolic procedure specialized to mechanical significance testing.
-
Null Ritual is part of Hypothesis Testing (Null vs. Alternative) Prime
The Null Ritual contains a mechanically executed null-hypothesis test whose inferential furniture has been stripped away while its verdict remains authoritative.
