Numero sign¶
Use the conventional letterlike symbol № as a compact marker introducing an ordinal or identifying number, while preserving its U+2116 character identity and distinguishing language-specific substitutes such as No., Nº, and #.
Core Idea¶
The numero sign is the conventional typographic character № used before a numeral to mean 'number' in ordinal identification, as in a numbered institution, route, law, issue, or item. Unicode encodes it as U+2116 NUMERO SIGN in the Letterlike Symbols block. Its identity combines a conventional sign-meaning relation with a specific encoded character; resemblance to N plus a raised o does not make every such sequence the same character.
