Open Innovation¶
The strategic stance in which a firm treats its boundary as a deliberately porous, governed variable for two-way knowledge flow — importing external IP and ideas inbound and releasing uncommercialized ones outbound — gated by absorptive capacity and stranded option value.
Core Idea¶
Open innovation (Chesbrough, 2003) is the stance in which a firm assumes useful knowledge and routes to market exist outside its boundaries as well as inside, and makes that boundary deliberately porous to two-way flow. Against the closed posture (internal R&D, proprietary findings, in-house commercialization), the open firm imports external IP through licensing, acquisition, and crowdsourcing, and exports ideas it cannot commercialize through spin-outs and out-licensing. Two conditions gate the return: absorptive capacity on inbound, stranded option value on outbound.
Scope of Application¶
Open innovation lives across innovation and knowledge management, which share one structural type: a knowledge-producing organization governing its IP boundary.

Clarity¶
Naming open innovation makes a firm's boundary policy a thing one can have a policy about, turning the unexamined closed default into a governed variable and pulling a grab-bag of tactics under one strategic stance. Its sharpest move is to make the outbound leg visible — a wall of uncommercialized patents reads as idle asset value, not protected territory. It also disciplines the error of treating openness as free upside by foregrounding absorptive capacity.
Manages Complexity¶
A firm's relationship to external knowledge otherwise presents as scattered, individually-evaluated tactics with the overarching question lost in vague competence proxies. Open innovation recasts every move as an instance of one governed variable — the boundary policy — tracked by a small parameter set: direction, terms, and the two gating conditions. The two-by-two of direction crossed with capacity supplies the branch structure, so the manager reasons about one coherent portfolio rather than re-deriving each deal.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The moves build on two facts: the boundary is a governed bilateral variable, and each direction's return is gated. The stance licenses diagnosis (read uncommercialized patents as stranded value, an unexamined closed posture as a forgone decision), inbound-failure diagnosis (distinguish absent external knowledge from inability to absorb it), intervention (set policy by direction and terms, predicting return from the gating conditions), and boundary-drawing (separate the governance stance from the boundary primitive, from diffusion, and from internal explore-exploit allocation).
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within innovation and knowledge management the stance transfers as mechanism, widely, because the whole family shares one structural type — a knowledge organization governing its IP boundary — so open science, government labs, and open-source ecosystems are co-instances, not cross-substrate transfers, with the lab or agency standing in for the firm. Beyond that family what recurs is not "open innovation" but the structural primitives it deploys: the parent primes boundary, interface, cultural_diffusion, and cooperation. Those carry the cross-domain lesson; open innovation's named cargo — absorptive capacity, option value of stranded IP, the inbound/outbound IP-policy split — presupposes a firm and stays home.
