OpenURL Knowledge Base¶
A maintained database of electronic-resource packages, titles, coverage, identifiers, linking syntax, and local activations used to route a citation to an institution-appropriate accessible copy.
Core Idea¶
An OpenURL knowledge base is a maintained database of electronic-resource titles, packages, platforms, coverage, identifiers, linking syntax, and local activations. A link resolver combines these records with an OpenURL citation and institutional context to select services and construct a path to an accessible copy.
The vendor's global resource universe is not the same as local holdings. A library activates the packages it licenses or otherwise provides. Successful resolution requires citation identity, package identity, coverage, entitlement, and link syntax to agree for the requested item.
Scope of Application¶
The abstraction supports several connected library services:
- Link resolvers — Select copies and construct item-appropriate target links.
- Discovery systems — Expose locally available electronic content in search results.
- A–Z lists — Generate title and package access views from holdings data.
- ERM integration — Share package metadata with license and renewal workflows.
- Consortial services — Coordinate global, consortium, and institution-specific activations.
Records may cover subscriptions, open access, embargoes, gaps, and platform migrations. The identity persists while schemas and products vary, provided the data mediates contextual resource resolution.
Clarity¶
Separate the requested item, title, provider package, platform copy, coverage interval, and local activation. “The library has this journal” is too coarse when the requested year is excluded or another platform supplies the accessible copy.
When a link fails, localize the cause: malformed citation metadata, identifier mismatch, incorrect coverage, stale activation, bad target syntax, authentication, or provider failure. The knowledge base is not the resolver, catalog, ERM, publisher list, or a general factual repository.
Manages Complexity¶
Libraries mediate millions of items across overlapping and changing packages. The knowledge base compresses that supply chain into normalized holdings records so resolver logic need not encode every arrangement. This scale makes maintenance central: one stale range can create many false-positive or false-negative links despite otherwise correct software.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Normalize the incoming citation and match candidate titles and packages. Test item coverage, then filter by local activation and user context. Construct links with platform syntax, present valid services, and record failures. Route corrections to the responsible provider, knowledge-base vendor, consortium, or local record owner so the maintenance loop closes.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The architecture transfers among library systems when the chain identity → candidate copies → coverage and entitlement → actionable service remains intact. A commercial and open-source resolver can instantiate the same abstraction. A database about documents does not qualify without institution-sensitive availability and linking. No immediate DAG parent is asserted because the current catalog lacks a verified electronic-resource knowledge-system genus.
Transfer across institutions requires relocalization: the global title and package model may persist, while activations, license coverage, preferred copies, authentication routes, and user eligibility must be recomputed for the receiving library.
Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
OpenURL Knowledge Base sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (97th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
