Orientation Loss¶
Diagnose why a competent user gets lost by checking three location facts — where am I, what can I move to, how did I arrive — at each transition seam, reading the orientation state off the count of missing facts regardless of substrate.
Core Idea¶
Orientation loss is the interaction failure in which a user can no longer answer "where am I in this space?" — spatial, informational, procedural, or temporal — and so cannot reliably choose the next action. The structural commitment is that any navigable interface must continuously supply three location facts: where you are, what you can move to, and how you arrived. When one degrades, orientation is impaired; when all three fail, the user is lost. The failure is sharpest at transitions.
Scope of Application¶
Orientation loss lives across the navigation-and-situation-awareness subfields of HCI and human factors, wherever a person moves through a structured space via an interface.
- Building wayfinding — hospitals and airports where signage fails to hold spatial orientation.
- Information architecture — deep site hierarchies where breadcrumbs and menus drop, especially at handoffs.
- Procedural/form design — multi-step applications where the user cannot tell the step or how to back up.

Clarity¶
Naming orientation loss separates interface failure from task failure: when a competent user abandons an apparently simple task, the structural test is whether they can state the three facts at each transition. If any reads "no," the interface produces the failure and no content simplification fixes it. The label gives one diagnostic crossing the field's substrate splits, locating the defect at a specific transition.
Manages Complexity¶
The field treats its navigation problems as separate disciplines with their own vocabularies. Orientation loss collapses that sprawl to two things: a fixed three-fact checklist invariant across substrate, and a fixed location for the failure — the transition. The analyst walks the transitions and checks the same triad at each seam, reading off which boundary drops which fact, and the remedy follows directly.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept licenses diagnostic reasoning (counting missing location facts and localizing the defect to a specific transition), boundary-drawing (separating interface failure from task failure), and predictive/interventionist reasoning (forecasting loss from mode-density and salience, restoring the missing fact with the substrate's instance, and reasoning about compounding recovery cost).
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within interaction design the diagnostic transfers as mechanism across wayfinding, information architecture, procedural design, and situation awareness — each catalog is a substrate instance of restoring the three facts, so results cross as engineering. Beyond it the parent situation_awareness genuinely travels to controllers and dashboards; carry that, since the triad and transition machinery need a navigating user and interface. "Lost in a codebase" is metaphor.
