Original Reporting¶

The journalistic practice of generating new primary evidence — by interview, on-site observation, document acquisition, or original analysis — rather than re-processing the public record, forming the irreducible base layer that caps the reliability of all derivative work above it.

Core Idea¶

Original reporting is the journalistic practice of generating new primary evidence — through direct interview, on-site observation, primary-document acquisition, or original data analysis — rather than aggregating, synthesizing, or commenting on evidence already in the public record. A piece contains original reporting to the extent that it adds evidentiary content that did not exist in accessible form before the reporter's work; a piece that synthesizes five prior publications, however skillfully, carries none.

The distinction is operational rather than absolute. Most journalism blends original gathering with secondary synthesis, and the question a practitioner or editor asks is whether any given claim in the piece rests on new primary evidence the reporter obtained or on prior reporting and documents the reporter re-processed. That question matters because the two categories carry different reliability profiles and different downstream liabilities: a claim backed by a document the reporter holds, or a source the reporter interviewed, traces back to a defined and interrogatable evidentiary act; a claim that cites only prior coverage is downstream of however many gathering and judgment failures occurred upstream. The profession formalizes this asymmetry through attribution conventions — "according to documents obtained by this outlet," "in an interview with X" — that signal to readers which claims are primary and which are derived.

The deeper structural function original reporting performs in the information ecosystem is as the irreducible base layer of the evidentiary chain: every subsequent aggregation, commentary, and analysis must ultimately resolve to original gathering at some point, and the reliability of the derivative work is bounded by the quality of the original. When original reporting capacity is lost — as with the collapse of local newsrooms whose reporters covered courts, city councils, and regulatory agencies from direct attendance — the entire chain above that layer degrades, with no amount of secondary aggregation able to substitute for the absent primary evidence.

What It Is Not¶

Not original prose or fresh angle. The "original" is in the evidence, not the writing. A vividly written, novel-seeming take that re-processes five prior publications carries no original reporting; a flat, workmanlike piece resting on a document the reporter obtained carries it. Authority must be inferred from provenance, not from fluency — confident writing on no primary act is derived content dressed as primary.
Not investigative journalism. Investigative work is a style of sustained accountability reporting; it typically involves original gathering but the two are not coextensive. A short interview-based item contains original reporting without being investigative, and a long exposé can lean heavily on already-public records. The construct names the evidentiary act, not the genre or its ambition.
Not a whole-piece label. The primary/derived line is drawn claim by claim, not piece by piece. Most journalism blends original gathering with secondary synthesis, so the right unit of judgment is the individual assertion's evidentiary basis — asking "is this piece original?" mistakes the operational binary for a property of the article.
Not a denial that synthesis has value. Aggregation and commentary are genuine work. The construct does not dismiss them; it fixes their place in the chain — their reliability is downstream of, and capped by, the original reporting they cite. The claim is about provenance and ceiling, not about worth.
Not a guarantee of truth or accuracy. Resting on a primary gathering act installs a reliability floor — a defined, interrogatable evidentiary base — not a verdict. The reporter can misread a document or be lied to by a source; what original reporting supplies is a claim that traces to one locatable act, not a claim certified correct.

Scope of Application¶

Original reporting lives across the news-producing and news-evaluating subfields of journalism and media studies, wherever a published claim's reliability turns on whether someone gathered primary evidence; its reach is within that domain, while the same primary-versus-secondary mechanism that recurs in science, auditing, history, and intelligence travels under the parent primary_vs_secondary_sources, not under this name.

Accountability and investigative journalism — the home turf: the sustained gathering of documents, interviews, and observed proceedings that produces evidence not previously in accessible form, the differentiator from aggregation-only commentary.
Editorial and verification practice — the desk's sourcing standards and the attribution conventions ("documents obtained by this outlet," "in an interview with X," on-record versus on-background) that flag, claim by claim, which assertions are primary and therefore interrogatable.
Fact-checking and media-literacy work — provenance-tracing a viral or contested claim back down its chain to ask whether anyone, anywhere, gathered primary evidence, or whether the stack is derivative all the way down.
Media-economics and press-policy analysis — the local-news-desert literature, where the loss of courts-and-council reporters is read precisely as a base-layer collapse that no volume of aggregation can backfill, and the free-rider under-supply of costly primary gathering motivates subsidy and protection.

Clarity¶

Naming original reporting makes legible the evidence-provenance question that polished prose otherwise hides: of every claim in a piece, which rests on primary evidence the reporter obtained and which is downstream of someone else's gathering. A skilled aggregation and a piece of accountability work can read identically on the page; the distinction asks the reader and the editor to trace each claim to its evidentiary act rather than judge the writing's authority by its fluency. A story's reliability is thereby decomposed: it is bounded not by how well the piece is argued but by the quality of the original gathering it ultimately resolves to.

The concept's sharper service is reframing journalism's value as a provenance chain rather than a flat catalog of articles. Once original reporting is named as the irreducible base layer, the ecosystem's apparent abundance becomes legible as a thin stratum of primary gathering beneath a tall stack of derivative work, and the practitioner can ask where the evidence actually enters — and what degrades if that entry point disappears. This dissolves the puzzle of why a region saturated with commentary can still suffer an information collapse: when the courts and council reporters who supplied the base layer are gone, no volume of secondary synthesis can substitute for primary evidence that was never gathered. The distinction also sharpens what attribution conventions are for — "documents obtained by this outlet," "in an interview with X" are not stylistic flourishes but markers that tell the reader which claims are primary and therefore which evidentiary act they could, in principle, interrogate.

Manages Complexity¶

Evaluating the reliability of a news story is, taken claim by claim, an open-ended investigation: each assertion could be sourced any number of ways, each source could have failed in any number of ways, and a polished piece offers no surface cue to which claims are load-bearing primary evidence and which are inherited from upstream work. Original reporting compresses that evaluation by imposing a single binary on every claim — does this rest on new primary evidence the reporter obtained, or on prior reporting re-processed? — and by asserting that the two categories carry systematically different reliability profiles. The analyst no longer has to reconstruct each claim's full evidentiary history; sorting it into primary or derived already fixes the dominant fact about it: a primary claim resolves to one defined, interrogatable gathering act, while a derived claim is downstream of however many gathering and judgment failures occurred above it, bounded by the weakest link in a chain the reader cannot see.

Scaled up from the single piece to the whole information ecosystem, the same binary collapses an apparently flat catalog of countless articles into a layered provenance structure: a thin base stratum where primary evidence actually enters, and a tall stack of derivative work whose reliability is capped by that base. What looks like a high-dimensional landscape of independent sources resolves to a small number of original-gathering nodes plus everything that ultimately resolves back to them. This is the branch structure the concept hands the analyst: instead of auditing the entire stack, locate where evidence enters and ask whether that entry layer is intact. The qualitative health of the ecosystem can then be read off a single parameter — the state of original-gathering capacity — which is why the concept predicts, rather than merely describes, that a region saturated with commentary can still suffer an information collapse: when the courts-and-council reporters who supplied the base layer disappear, no quantity of secondary synthesis raises a ceiling set by primary evidence that was never gathered. A problem that would otherwise demand claim-by-claim and source-by-source modeling reduces to a provenance trace down to its base and a check on whether that base still exists.

Abstract Reasoning¶

Original reporting licenses a set of provenance-reasoning moves over any journalistic claim or, scaled up, any information ecosystem, all turning on the single binary it imposes (primary evidence the reporter obtained versus prior reporting re-processed) and on its claim that the two carry different reliability profiles.

Diagnostic — read provenance off the page and infer the hidden chain. The characteristic inference runs from attribution language and claim structure to the unseen evidentiary act behind a claim. Confronted with a polished piece, the analyst sorts each load-bearing claim: "documents obtained by this outlet" and "in an interview with X" mark a claim that resolves to one defined, interrogatable gathering act; a claim citing only prior coverage marks a derived claim downstream of however many upstream gathering and judgment failures the reader cannot see. From this the analyst infers the claim's reliability ceiling — a derived claim is bounded by the weakest link in its hidden chain — and locates where, if anywhere, primary evidence actually entered. A sharp diagnostic discriminates two surfaces that read identically: a skilled aggregation and a piece of accountability work can be indistinguishable in fluency, so authority must be inferred from provenance, not prose. When fluency and provenance diverge — confident writing resting on no primary act — infer derived content dressed as primary.

Interventionist — name the act that changes reliability, and predict the effect. The construct's interventions all operate on where evidence enters. To raise a claim's reliability, the lever is to perform an original gathering act — obtain the document, interview the source, observe the proceeding — converting a derived claim into one with a traceable evidentiary base; the predicted effect is a reliability floor the claim previously lacked. At the ecosystem scale the lever is original-gathering capacity: fund the courts-and-council reporters who supply the base layer, and the reliability ceiling of everything above rises; withdraw them, and it falls. The construct yields a pointed negative prediction here — adding secondary synthesis to compensate for lost primary gathering cannot raise the ceiling, because no quantity of re-processing manufactures evidence that was never gathered. The free-rider structure adds a market-level interventionist claim: because original work is costly and aggregation cheap, the ecosystem under-supplies primary gathering, so without deliberate subsidy or protection the base layer predictably thins.

Boundary-drawing — where the primary/derived line bites and where it blurs. The construct insists the distinction is operational, not absolute: most pieces blend gathering and synthesis, so the boundary is drawn claim by claim, not piece by piece, and the right unit of judgment is the individual assertion's evidentiary basis. It also bounds its own remit — synthesis is genuine work with real value, but that value is downstream of and capped by the original reporting it cites, so the construct does not deny the worth of aggregation, only fixes its place in the chain. And it marks the regime where the binary stops being informative: a claim of pure interpretation or opinion, resting on no factual evidentiary act, falls outside the primary/derived sort entirely.

Predictive / order-of-events reasoning. Because every derivative layer must ultimately resolve to original gathering, the construct predicts a base-bounded dynamic: degrade the base layer and the entire stack above it degrades after a lag, even while the volume of commentary appears undiminished — which is why a region saturated with commentary can still suffer an information collapse. It predicts the direction of failure propagation (upstream gathering failures flow downstream into every piece that cites them, never the reverse) and predicts aggregation bias amplification — when aggregators select primary sources non-randomly, the derivative stack inherits and magnifies the selection skew of the base it draws on.

Knowledge Transfer¶

Within journalism the construct transfers as mechanism, fully and literally, across every subfield that produces or evaluates news. From its accountability-and-investigative home it carries unchanged into editorial and verification practice (the desk's sourcing standards, the attribution conventions that flag which claims are primary), into fact-checking and media-literacy work (provenance-tracing a viral claim back to whether anyone gathered primary evidence), into media-economics and press-policy analysis (the local-news-desert literature, where the loss of courts-and-council reporters is read precisely as a base-layer collapse no aggregation can backfill), and into platform and aggregation studies (where derivative content's reliability ceiling is set by the originals it scrapes). In each the apparatus moves without translation: the per-claim primary/derived binary, the diagnostic that fluency does not imply provenance, the intervention that only an original gathering act installs a reliability floor, and the ecosystem prediction that commentary-saturated regions can still suffer information collapse. This is genuine within-domain mechanism transfer.

Beyond journalism, original reporting is best understood as the journalism instance of a more general mechanism that itself recurs across domains — and the honest move is to let the parent carry the cross-domain lesson, not the journalism-specific construct. The general mechanism is the primary-versus-secondary distinction: the same operational sort between evidence newly generated by direct contact with the world and evidence re-processed from prior work, with the same downstream consequence that derivative reliability is bounded by the primary base. That parent genuinely recurs across substrates as co-instances, each with its own native term and its own gathering act: fieldwork versus desk-anthropology in ethnography; substantive testing of source records versus reliance on management representations in auditing; experiment, observation, and specimen collection versus literature review in field science; archival primary-document research versus historiography in history; collection (HUMINT/SIGINT/IMINT) versus all-source synthesis in intelligence analysis; clinical examination and direct testing versus chart review in diagnostic medicine. These are not metaphors — the same evidentiary mechanism really travels, and a provenance-tracing protocol built in one transfers to another. But what travels is the parent, not "original reporting." The journalism-specific cargo stays home: the attribution lexicon ("documents obtained by this outlet," "in an interview with X," on-the-record versus on-background), the editorial-norm apparatus, the free-rider press-economics story, and the framing of reporting as the irreducible base of a public information ecosystem — all of which presuppose newsrooms, readers, and the institutions of journalism, and lose their referent in a histology lab or an audit engagement. Invoking "original reporting" for a non-journalistic gathering act is borrowing the journalism dress for the parent's mechanism; the load-bearing transfer should carry primary_vs_secondary_sources, of which this is the communication-domain instance. That boundary — the mechanism that travels versus the domain dress that does not — is the subject of Structural Core vs. Domain Accent below.

Examples¶

Canonical¶

The Washington Post's Watergate reporting (1972–74) by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein is the textbook case. Rather than re-processing the government's public statements — which uniformly denied White House involvement in the Democratic National Committee break-in — the two reporters generated new primary evidence: interviews with campaign and administration staff, financial records tracing the burglars' funding to the Committee to Re-elect the President, and the confidential source later revealed as FBI official Mark Felt ("Deep Throat"). Each key claim traced back to a specific, interrogatable gathering act the reporters performed, not to prior coverage. The story could not have been assembled by any amount of synthesizing existing reporting, because the evidence did not exist in accessible form until they gathered it — which is precisely what made it accountability journalism rather than commentary.

Mapped back: Woodward and Bernstein are the reporter; the staffers, financial records, and Felt are the primary sources. Their interviews, document acquisition, and source cultivation are the original gathering act generating evidence not previously accessible. Every load-bearing claim resolving to one such act is the provenance chain terminating in an irreducible base layer, and their attributed sourcing marks the per-claim primary/derived sort.

Applied / In Practice¶

The "news desert" research program — most prominently the annual State of Local News reports led by Penelope Muse Abernathy (formerly at UNC, later Northwestern) — deploys the concept as a diagnostic of ecosystem health. The work documents that thousands of U.S. counties have lost their local newspapers, leaving many with no full-time reporter covering courts, city councils, or regional regulators from direct attendance. The framing is explicitly a base-layer collapse: the primary-gathering nodes that once supplied original evidence disappear, and no volume of national commentary, social media, or aggregation backfills the missing primary record — because that evidence was never gathered at all. The research recognizes the free-rider dynamic (costly original gathering, cheap re-processing) as the market failure driving the collapse, motivating subsidy and nonprofit-newsroom remedies aimed squarely at restoring original-gathering capacity.

Mapped back: The vanished courts-and-council reporters are the reporter role whose original gathering act supplied the provenance chain's base. Their loss enacts the base-bounded reliability ceiling: the derivative stack above degrades once the entry point is gone. The under-supply the research names is the free-rider dynamic, and the "saturated with commentary yet information-collapsed" finding is the concept's signature ecosystem prediction confirmed in the field.

Structural Tensions¶

T1: Reliability floor versus certified truth (what a primary act does and does not buy). Resting a claim on an original gathering act installs a reliability floor — a defined, interrogatable evidentiary base — but not a verdict on the claim's accuracy. The reporter can misread the document or be lied to by the source; the act supplies a claim that traces to one locatable evidentiary event, not a claim that is correct. The tension is that "original reporting" is asked to carry two loads it fills unevenly: it reliably fixes where the evidence entered and whether it can be interrogated, but it says nothing about whether the interrogation would vindicate the claim. Treating the primary act as a truth guarantee overreads it; dismissing it because it can still be wrong misses that it converts an unbounded chain into one traceable failure point. Diagnostic: For this claim, are you asking whether it traces to an interrogatable gathering act (the floor the act installs), or whether it is true (which the act does not settle)?

T2: Provenance versus fluency (the authority you must infer, not read). A skilled aggregation and a piece of accountability reporting can read identically on the page; polished prose offers no surface cue to which claims are load-bearing primary evidence and which are inherited from upstream. The construct insists authority be inferred from provenance, not judged from the writing's fluency — confident prose resting on no primary act is derived content dressed as primary. The tension is that the quality readers and editors actually perceive (fluency) is orthogonal to the quality that bounds reliability (provenance), so the more accomplished the writing, the more effectively it can hide the absence of gathering. The concept asks its user to distrust exactly the signal the surface most strongly emits. Diagnostic: Is the piece's authority coming from how well it reads, or from a locatable, interrogatable evidentiary act you could in principle trace?

T3: Claim-by-claim binary versus whole-piece verdict (the unit that cuts). The primary/derived line is operational, not absolute: most journalism blends original gathering with secondary synthesis, so the boundary is drawn claim by claim, not piece by piece. Asking "is this piece original?" mistakes the operational binary for a property of the article. The tension is that the concept's precision lives at the assertion level, while practitioners, editors, and readers want a piece-level judgment they can act on — and forcing the per-claim sort onto a whole article either overcredits a mostly-derived piece for its few primary claims or discounts real gathering buried in synthesis. A further blur: a claim of pure interpretation or opinion, resting on no factual evidentiary act, falls outside the sort entirely. Diagnostic: Are you sorting each load-bearing assertion by its evidentiary basis, or attaching a single primary/derived label to the whole piece?

T4: Costly base versus cheap derivative (the free-rider under-supply). Original gathering is costly and aggregation is cheap, so the information ecosystem predictably under-supplies the base layer absent deliberate subsidy or protection. The tension cuts against economic self-repair: the layer whose quality caps everything above it is precisely the layer the market starves, because a re-processor captures the value of primary evidence it did not pay to gather. What is structurally irreplaceable is also structurally unfunded, so the base thins even as derivative volume swells — and the collapse arrives with a lag, invisible while commentary appears undiminished. The construct thereby predicts that a region can be saturated with content and still suffer an information collapse, because volume is not provenance. Diagnostic: Does the base-layer's supply here depend on subsidy or protection to persist, or can the market fund costly primary gathering on its own?

T5: Synthesis has value versus synthesis is capped (worth versus place in the chain). The construct does not deny that aggregation and commentary are genuine work; it fixes their place: their reliability is downstream of, and bounded by, the original reporting they cite. The tension is that these two claims pull in opposite rhetorical directions — one honors the derivative layer, the other permanently subordinates it — and the concept must hold both without collapsing into either a dismissal of synthesis or a pretense that clever aggregation can manufacture the reliability of evidence never gathered. No quantity of re-processing raises a ceiling set by an absent primary act; yet the synthesis that resolves five sources into one legible account is real value the chain needs. Diagnostic: Are you disputing whether the aggregation is worth doing, or fixing where its reliability ceiling sits relative to the originals it cites?

T6: Autonomy versus reduction (its own named practice or the journalism instance of its parent). "Original reporting" is a canonically named journalistic practice with its own cargo — the attribution lexicon ("documents obtained by this outlet," "in an interview with X," on-record versus on-background), the editorial-norm apparatus, the free-rider press-economics story, and the framing of reporting as the irreducible base of a public information ecosystem. Yet its portable structure is not proprietary: the same operational sort between newly generated primary evidence and re-processed secondary work, with the same downstream consequence that derivative reliability is capped by the primary base, recurs as fieldwork-versus-desk-anthropology, substantive testing versus management representations, experiment versus literature review, collection versus all-source synthesis. What travels is the parent primary_vs_secondary_sources; the journalism dress does not. Diagnostic: Resolve toward the parent (primary_vs_secondary_sources) when asking what carries into science, auditing, history, or intelligence; toward "original reporting" when diagnosing a specific journalistic claim's provenance in situ.

Structural–Framed Character¶

Original reporting sits at mixed — a genuine primary-versus-secondary epistemic structure bound to the practice and institutions of journalism. Its evaluative weight is low and leans structural: the concept names an evidentiary act (generating new primary evidence) and installs a reliability floor, not a verdict — it fixes where evidence entered, not whether a claim is true or good. Human-practice-bound reads framed: the base-layer, free-rider, and public-information-ecosystem framing presuppose newsrooms, readers, and the institutions of journalism, and dissolve without them — the ecosystem story has no referent in a histology lab. Institutional origin reads framed for the domain dress: the attribution lexicon ("documents obtained by this outlet," on-record versus on-background) and editorial-norm apparatus are artifacts of journalistic practice, even though the underlying primary/secondary distinction is a general epistemic fact. Vocab-travels reads framed: that attribution and press-economics vocabulary loses its referent off the journalism substrate, while the parent distinction floats free. Import-vs-recognize leans structural: the parent is recognized as genuine co-instances — fieldwork versus desk-anthropology, substantive testing versus management representations, experiment versus literature review, collection versus all-source synthesis — mechanism, not metaphor.

The portable structural skeleton is the primary-versus-secondary sort — newly generated evidence from direct contact with the world versus re-processed prior work, with derivative reliability bounded by the primary base — which is exactly what original reporting instantiates as the communication-domain instance of its umbrella parent primary_vs_secondary_sources. That parent carries the cross-domain lesson into science, auditing, history, and intelligence; the attribution lexicon, editorial norms, and free-rider press-economics are the accent that stays home. Its character: an evaluatively-light evidentiary-provenance practice, structural in the primary/secondary skeleton it instantiates from its parent but pinned to journalism by the attribution-and-ecosystem furniture that supplies its distinctive content.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶

This section decides why original reporting is a domain-specific abstraction and not a prime — the portable core is a general primary/secondary sort already carried by its parent, while the attribution-and-ecosystem furniture is welded to journalism.

What is skeletal (could lift toward a cross-domain prime). Strip the journalism and a thin relational structure survives: evidence divides into that newly generated by direct contact with the world and that re-processed from prior work, every derivative claim must ultimately resolve to some primary act, and the reliability of the derivative is bounded by the primary base it terminates in. That skeleton factors, without residue, into the single parent the entry instantiates, primary_vs_secondary_sources — the operational sort between first-hand evidence and re-processed evidence, with its downstream ceiling consequence. It is genuinely substrate-portable, and recurs as real co-instances (not metaphors), each with its own native gathering act: fieldwork versus desk-anthropology in ethnography, substantive testing of records versus reliance on management representations in auditing, experiment and specimen collection versus literature review in field science, archival document research versus historiography in history, HUMINT/SIGINT collection versus all-source synthesis in intelligence, clinical examination versus chart review in medicine. What is domain-bound. What makes the concept original reporting in particular is journalism furniture that does not survive extraction. The worked apparatus — the attribution lexicon ("documents obtained by this outlet," "in an interview with X," on-the-record versus on-background), the editorial-norm and sourcing-standard machinery, the framing of reporting as the irreducible base of a public information ecosystem, and the free-rider press-economics story (costly gathering, cheap aggregation, market under-supply, subsidy and nonprofit-newsroom remedies) — all presuppose newsrooms, readers, reporters, and the institutions of journalism. The decisive test: transplant the mechanism to a histology lab or an audit engagement and the attribution lexicon, the editorial norms, and the public-information-ecosystem story all lose their referent — the lab has substantive testing, the audit has source-record verification, but neither has "documents obtained by this outlet" or a news desert. What remains after the dress is dropped is the bare primary/secondary sort, i.e. the parent. The distinctive content is constituted by exactly the journalism practice the prime bar asks it to shed.

Why this does not clear the prime bar. A prime's vocabulary travels and its transfer is recognition of the same mechanism, not analogy. Original reporting's transfer is bimodal. Within journalism it travels intact as full mechanism — the per-claim primary/derived binary, the provenance-over-fluency diagnostic, the only-an-original-act-installs-a-floor intervention, and the base-bounded ecosystem prediction carry without translation from accountability reporting to editorial verification to fact-checking to press-economics to platform studies, because each is literally a setting of newsroom-produced or newsroom-evaluated claims. Beyond journalism the named concept does not travel: invoking "original reporting" for a non-journalistic gathering act borrows the journalism dress for the parent's mechanism and does evocative, not analytic, work — a field scientist runs no attribution lexicon and faces no news desert. Not to Be Confused With¶

Investigative journalism. A genre of sustained accountability reporting, defined by its ambition and depth. Original reporting is the evidentiary act — generating new primary evidence — and the two are not coextensive: a short interview-based item contains original reporting without being investigative, and a long exposé can lean heavily on already-public records. Tell: is the label describing the story's ambition and scope (investigative), or whether a given claim rests on new primary evidence the reporter obtained (original reporting)?
Aggregation, synthesis, and commentary (secondary work). The re-processing of evidence already in the public record — the secondary alternative to original gathering. It is genuine, valuable work, but its reliability is downstream of and capped by the originals it cites. The distinction is not worth-versus-worthless but where each sits in the provenance chain. Tell: does the claim add evidentiary content that did not exist in accessible form before (original reporting), or re-package prior reporting and documents (secondary work)?
Fact-checking. The verification practice of tracing a contested claim back down its chain to test whether it holds. Fact-checking uses the primary/derived distinction as a diagnostic tool but is evaluative — it audits existing claims rather than generating new primary evidence. Tell: is the activity producing a locatable new gathering act (original reporting), or assessing the provenance and truth of a claim someone else made (fact-checking)?
An exclusive / scoop. A story a given outlet publishes first. Exclusivity is about priority of publication, which may or may not rest on original gathering — a scoop can be a leaked document re-published, and routine original reporting need not be exclusive. Original reporting is about where the evidence entered, not who printed it first.
