Ounce¶
A historically related family of customary units whose quantity kind and magnitude become determinate only after the applicable system and context are named.
Core Idea¶
Ounce names a family of historically related customary units rather than one invariant magnitude. In ordinary United States mass measurement, the avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of the international avoirdupois pound, exactly 28.349523125 grams. Precious metals commonly use the troy ounce, 480 grains or exactly 31.1034768 grams. Fluid ounces measure volume, not mass: the United States fluid ounce is exactly 29.5735295625 millilitres, while the imperial fluid ounce is exactly 28.4130625 millilitres. Other specialized uses include ounce-force, areal mass such as ounces per square yard, and trade shorthand such as copper weight per square foot in printed circuit boards.
Scope of Application¶
The ounce family appears in food packaging, household recipes, postal and shipping weights, precious-metal markets, pharmacy history, textiles, leather, paper, printing, and engineering supply chains. The relevant branch follows the practice. A nutrition label's oz generally denotes avoirdupois mass; a beverage's fl oz denotes volume; a gold market quotation uses troy ounces; fabric described as “10-ounce denim” commonly means mass per unit area, with the area convention supplied by industry usage.
Clarity¶
Four labels resolve most ambiguity:

Manages Complexity¶
Measurement systems allow quantities to circulate across people, instruments, contracts, and jurisdictions. The ounce family creates legacy interoperability but also ambiguity. Treating it as a typed family manages that ambiguity by requiring the analyst to resolve dimension and system before arithmetic. This catches errors earlier than numerical plausibility checks: 12 fluid ounces of water and 12 ounces by mass may yield nearby-looking values, while oil, honey, and metal make the difference conspicuous.

Knowledge Transfer¶
Exact transfer occurs across contexts only when the complete unit branch transfers. A troy ounce of gold and a troy ounce of silver share the same mass unit. An avoirdupois ounce of food and one of postage share another. US and imperial fluid ounces do not transfer numerically despite a shared quantity kind and name.
At prime level, Ounce instantiates Measurement, Unitization, and Standardization. Its deeper lesson—qualify a polysemous label before transforming data—also resembles Type Checking, but that is an analogy.
