The Papageno effect is the documented pattern in which mass-media narratives depicting people surviving suicidal crises — by coping, seeking help, or reinterpreting their situation — are followed by measurable reductions in population suicide rates in the exposed audience window. It is the protective complement to the harmful Werther effect. The mechanism is observational learning at the level of option-set salience: an at-risk audience member who identifies with a surviving model updates the perceived availability of survival routes, shifting the marginal probability of suicide downward.
