Peak-end rule

Predict the remembered value of an extended experience from just two moments — its most intense point and its final moment, averaged — while the duration and the integral of momentary affect over the interior receive near-zero weight.

Core Idea

The peak-end rule is the finding (Kahneman et al. 1993) that the retrospective evaluation of an extended hedonic experience is determined approximately by the average of two moments — the most intense point (the peak) and the final moment (the end) — with the duration and the integral of momentary affect receiving near-zero weight. Memory does not store the integral; it samples a sparse, salience-weighted record in which intensity and recency-at-retrieval privilege exactly these two anchors.

Scope of Application

The rule lives across the applied content areas of one substrate — the human episodic-memory readout of an affective trajectory used to drive a repeat-or-avoid choice.

Clarity

Naming the rule forces the distinction between experienced utility (the moment-by-moment integral) and remembered utility (the summary verdict that governs repeat choice). Once held apart, the cold-water and colonoscopy "paradoxes" dissolve into a mechanical fact: choice tracks the remembered version, which is calibrated to a peak-end average. It also sharpens the diffuse appeal to "recency" into named, separately manipulable anchors.

Manages Complexity

The rule collapses an infinite-dimensional affect trajectory to three numbers — peak intensity, end intensity, and the sign of each. A designer need not model the whole curve but locates two moments and reads off the verdict. It also fixes where intervention has leverage: the peak and the end move the remembered verdict directly, while the interior and duration are near-wasted effort.

Abstract Reasoning

The rule licenses a diagnostic move (infer the remembered verdict, and the lived experience it conceals, from two intensities), an interventionist move (act on the anchors, never on the average — taper an aversive episode to a gentle close), boundary-drawing (it binds only for an episodic-memory readout, with duration neglect as the litmus), and an order-of-events move: identical affect in different orderings is remembered differently.

Knowledge Transfer

Within cognitive psychology the rule transfers as mechanism — its "cross-domain" applications are reach across content areas of one substrate, the human episodic-memory readout, so the two-anchor read and the intervention map carry intact across medicine, hospitality, events, and UX. Beyond an episodic-memory readout its calibration does not travel: an integrating instrument or stateless logger would not over-weight the end.
