Peasant¶
A historically situated agrarian class position combining household cultivation, limited control of land, and obligations or subordination to landlords, markets, or states.

Peasant status typically joins family labor and subsistence-oriented production with rent, tax, service, tenancy, or unequal market relations, while its legal and cultural boundaries vary across periods and regions. Land tenure and household reproduction tie cultivators to local resources, while extraction by political or property holders differentiates the class from autonomous commercial farmers and wage laborers.
