Pedestrian Shed¶
Measure the true reach of a transit stop or destination by counting who can walk to it within a time tolerance along the actual street network, not the straight-line circle.
Core Idea¶
A pedestrian shed — or walkshed — is the area around a destination or transit stop reachable on foot within a set time or distance, measured along the real pedestrian network rather than as a straight-line radius. Conventional thresholds are five minutes (~400 m / quarter-mile) for everyday needs and ten minutes (~800 m / half-mile) for regional transit. Because culs-de-sac, superblocks, and missing crossings sever connections, the true shed is a network-shaped polygon, often a small fraction of the geometric circle.

Clarity¶
The shed pins down the difference between a notional service area and an effective one — the quarter-mile circle a planner draws versus the polygon a resident can actually walk. It replaces the vague "near transit" with a checkable question: what is reachable on foot within tolerance, given the grid that exists? The gap between circle and polygon becomes the quantity the analysis is about, and its size is itself the diagnosis of a car-oriented fabric.
Manages Complexity¶
A node's walkability looks like a thicket of separate questions — ridership potential, retail viability, neighbourhood size, access to food and clinics — each seemingly demanding its own study. The shed collapses them onto one measurable quantity: the count of residents, jobs, or destinations inside the network polygon, driven by just two inputs, land-use density and grid connectivity. The analyst tracks one polygon and its coverage instead of four investigations, and each downstream outcome follows as a readout.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The shed licenses diagnostic reasoning (reading a connectivity defect off the circle-to-polygon gap, its shape localising the cause), interventionist reasoning (closing a connection and forecasting the shed's growth and downstream readouts), boundary-drawing (choosing the tolerance by trip type and setting walkable grain), and predictive reasoning (anticipating ridership and commerce from coverage). Each turns on one comparison — network polygon against geometric circle — with coverage treated as a function of density and connectivity.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within walkability planning the shed transfers as mechanism: transit-oriented development, New Urbanism, public-health research, and equity audits all compute the same network polygon and pull the same lever, with the quarter-mile tolerance and cul-de-sac penalty travelling untranslated. Beyond walkability the reach becomes structural, not literal ped-shed practice: strip the urban substrate and what recurs is an attractor plus a friction-weighted reach plus a tolerance, defining who-can-use-it.
