Phylogenesis is the evolutionary origination and historical development of a taxonomic lineage through descent with modification, divergence, and sometimes extinction. It names the lineage-generating process and history, whereas phylogenetics is the inferential discipline reconstructing relationships and ontogenesis is development of an individual organism.

Scope of Application¶
The abstraction recurs literally within evolutionary accounts of the origin, divergence, and persistence of biological taxa and lineages. The following habitats preserve the same recognition machinery; they are not invitations to extend the name metaphorically.

Clarity¶
State the taxonomic unit, temporal scale, and evidence supporting descent. A reconstructed tree is a model of phylogenesis, not the process itself. Avoid treating current species as ancestors of other current species unless the evidence specifically establishes an ancestor–descendant relation.
A practical identification audit begins with the typed roles rather than the title: establish the ancestral lineage, verify the heritable variation, then test the remaining conditions and exclusions.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction joins population change, branching, extinction, and inherited evidence into a lineage history. It separates claims about what happened in evolution from the algorithms and classifications used to infer or summarize it.
The compression remains accountable because each simplification has a named failure condition. Disagreement can be localized to a missing role, an invalid assumption, an ambiguous measurement, or a neighboring abstraction instead of being hidden inside an unanalyzed label.
