Pivot¶
Supply the missing middle option between persist and quit — a deliberate change of strategic direction that redeploys the calibrated learning from a disconfirmed bet — and locate it on a typed catalogue by asking which one dimension changes while the rest are preserved.
Core Idea¶
A pivot, codified by Eric Ries in Lean Startup (2011), is the deliberate change of strategic direction that explicitly preserves and redeploys the learning from prior attempts — distinct from persisting unchanged and from starting from zero. Its defining commitment is the preservation discipline: the prior path is treated as calibrated understanding of which assumption was wrong, and that calibration selects the new direction. What carries forward makes it a redirection rather than a liquidation.
Scope of Application¶
The pivot's full machinery lives in lean-startup and adjacent venture-product practice; only the thin three-way structure travels further, and even there as the general adaptation-with-memory pattern.

Clarity¶
Naming the pivot makes a third option legible that founders facing disconfirmation otherwise cannot see under the binary of persist or quit. It reframes the prior path from sunk cost into calibrated information about which assumption was wrong. Its sharper force is the preservation question — what specifically are we carrying forward, and is it load-bearing? — which unmasks the two impostors, escalation and quitting.
Manages Complexity¶
Once a strategy is disconfirmed the space of next moves is unbounded. The pivot compresses it along two axes: a three-way branch (persist, pivot, quit) supplying the hidden middle, and Ries's ten typed moves discretizing the change space, each changing one dimension while holding the rest. The carry-forward question supplies the remaining parameter, keying the choice and discriminating a real pivot from its impostors.
