Portato¶
A bowed-string articulation that gently rearticulates successive notes while sustaining them within one connected bow stroke.
Core Idea¶
Portato lies between fully legato and separated staccato articulation, producing distinct pulses without breaking the continuous bow, and its dotted-under-slur notation is historically ambiguous. The player maintains one bow direction while briefly changing pressure or speed for each note, creating audible renewals within an overall connected phrase. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
