Positionality

Treat a knowledge claim as constitutively shaped by the knower's social and institutional location, and declare that standpoint up front so readers can grant partial credit — strong where access opened, silent where it was foreclosed.

Core Idea

Positionality is the methodological principle that a knowledge claim is constitutively shaped by the social, institutional, and experiential location of the knower, and that this shaping must be declared alongside the claim. A researcher's race, class, gender, affiliation, language, and mode of entry determine which interactions occurred, which questions were thinkable, and which phenomena were visible. Because location is constitutive rather than removable, the discipline is to name it explicitly so readers can calibrate — granting partial credit, not blanket trust or suspicion.

Clarity

The concept gives a reader something to do with an account other than accept or distrust it whole: the standpoint becomes interpretive equipment, so the account reads as strong where access opened, weak where it strained, silent where it foreclosed. Its sharpest work separates positionality from bias — bias is a removable contaminant, while positionality cannot be removed without removing the observation it conditions. The injunction shifts from "eliminate your bias" to "declare your position."

Manages Complexity

An ethnographic account is hundreds of observations, each resting on some interaction that did or did not happen; assessing it claim-by-claim is intractable, and a single global verdict discards information. Positionality routes the assessment through a few declared standpoint coordinates — affiliation, field language, mode of entry, relationship to the community — from which the reader derives a structured credibility map without auditing each claim's provenance. Gaps become specific, nameable absences predictable from the position.

Abstract Reasoning

The concept supports diagnosis (infer the access-shape and credibility map from declared coordinates, anticipating which voices are over- and under-represented), reading concealed standpoint as a default-to-center rather than absence, interventionist correctives (triangulate across positions; audit the absences) each paired with the gap it closes, boundary-drawing between declarable-constitutive positionality and removable-defect bias, and a fixed order-of-events: declare, then read.

Knowledge Transfer

Within the reflexive-research family the principle transfers as mechanism, working kit intact — ethnography, standpoint epistemology, clinical practice, and AI model cards are co-instances that index a claim to production conditions and demand declaration.
