The positivity effect is the age-graded shift in attention and memory toward positive emotional information and away from negative — a reversal of youthful negativity bias. Carstensen's Socioemotional Selectivity Theory attributes it to perceived remaining time, not chronological age: a limited horizon shifts goals from information acquisition toward emotionally meaningful, regulated experience. Two features mark it as mechanism: it is a relative re-weighting, not a mood rise, and it attenuates under cognitive load, indicating a goal-driven regulated process.

Clarity¶

It forces two distinctions: relative weighting versus global mood (measure an asymmetry, not a mood score), and goal-driven regulation versus passive bias, with the cognitive-load test as the built-in adjudicator.

A scatter of age-graded findings compresses to a single causal chain with one controlling variable: perceived time horizon sets goals, which re-weight attention and memory.
