Pre-Charge

Current-limited charging of a capacitive DC link before its normal power path is connected, reducing inrush at handover.

Core Idea

Pre-charge raises a capacitive DC link toward its source voltage through a current-limited path before the normal low-impedance power path is connected. This reduces the voltage difference and hence the damaging inrush at the main connection. A resistor and pre-charge contactor are common; an active converter can limit current instead. The identity is the limited preliminary charging and later handover, not one mandatory circuit topology.[ref-19f6422aa382][ref-4fd6e93b03eb]

Scope of Application

In an electric vehicle, a traction battery pre-charges discharged inverter DC-link capacitors before the main contactor closes. In ABB's industrial drive, fuses, a charging contactor and resistors gradually raise the DC-link voltage to a predefined level for normal operation. These are unlike installations of the same electrical sequence.[ref-19f6422aa382][ref-cb82e62f86a2]

The draft proposes no strict live DAG parent. Generic Sequencing is related but does not name the electrical mechanism. Live Preparation requires holding a primed state at a standing cost; a finite startup pre-charge need not do that. Stage-1 “Precharging” remains a variant proposal, not an applied alias.

Clarity

For an ideal passive constant-source resistor-capacitor path, \(V_C(t)=V_S(1-e^{-t/(RC)})\). That exponential is not universal: active constant-current pre-charge can produce an approximately linear voltage rise. A fixed wait alone is not pre-charge if the capacitor remains discharged, and one percentage or time threshold cannot be imposed on all systems.[ref-aee6bfbc57e0][ref-4fd6e93b03eb]

Manages Complexity

The staged sequence separates a dangerous closing transient into a limited charging phase and a condition-checked handover. The designer can assess capacitance, source voltage, allowable current, switch and resistor pulse ratings, and residual voltage before closing the main path. If the link fails to approach the source, the preliminary path and measurement can be examined before the main contactor is allowed to close.[ref-aee6bfbc57e0][ref-cb82e62f86a2]

Abstract Reasoning

Compare source and initial link voltage; choose a charging path that meets current and component limits; measure or predict the link's rise; then permit normal connection only when the residual difference is acceptable. In the ideal passive case \(I(0)=V_S/R\) and time constant \(RC\) expose a speed-versus-current tradeoff. An active circuit needs its own current/voltage trajectory, not the passive formula reused uncritically.[ref-aee6bfbc57e0][ref-4fd6e93b03eb]

Knowledge Transfer

The literal roles transfer between vehicle traction systems and industrial converters: a source, an initially low capacitive link, limited preliminary current, voltage approach, and main-path handover. A resistor, a fixed handover percentage, and physical reasons for each device's ratings do not transfer automatically. Merely delaying a switch or keeping a battery charged is not this electrical method.[ref-19f6422aa382][ref-cb82e62f86a2]

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Pre-Charge sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (85th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
