Clarity

Naming the preferred term makes a vocabulary's most consequential decision visible as a decision. Without it a thesaurus looks like a flat list; with it, each entry is an equivalence class with one authorized representative. It separates two things the work constantly blurs: which forms mean the same thing (the class boundary) from which form is the one to use (canonical selection). It also sharpens the line between a controlled vocabulary and a mere synonym ring: asymmetry plus obligation.

Manages Complexity

An uncontrolled vocabulary faces combinatorial sprawl — every concept surfaces under any synonym, and the query-to-record relation becomes a many-to-many tangle.
