In serial recall, early items receive the most rehearsal cycles before working memory saturates, transferring preferentially to long-term store (the early arm of the U-shaped serial-position curve). In impression formation, early items set an interpretive frame — Asch's reordered traits yield opposite evaluations. In both, the consequence is non-commutativity: the same content in different orders yields different beliefs.

Clarity¶

It also keeps apart two mechanisms that converge on the same sign — a storage effect (rehearsal) and a frame-setting effect (early items configuring the schema) — which stops a practitioner prescribing a storage remedy for a frame problem.
Manages Complexity¶
The effect compresses a scattered catalogue of order quirks into one non-commutativity diagnostic — "what came first, and did it get the extra weight?" — so the analyst tracks position-in-sequence rather than modeling the full pipeline. A two-branch structure follows: a storage branch (read off the serial-position curve, touched by exposure) and a frame branch (a shifted judgment, touched only by controlling what comes first).
