Problem-Solving Fixation¶
A familiar representation of a problem, method, or object becomes the first and dominant retrieval path, suppressing alternatives that the solver could otherwise use and producing an avoidable failure that can be relieved by disrupting the representation rather than adding knowledge.
Core Idea¶
Problem-Solving Fixation is the cognitive failure in which a familiar representation of a task, method, or object becomes the dominant retrieval route and suppresses a usable alternative. The solver is not missing the relevant capability. The first representation constrains what is inspected and compared, producing failure that can be relieved by reordering, neutral redescription, decomposition, delay, or forced alternative generation rather than by teaching the answer.
The node is the domain genus shared by the Einstellung Effect, where a practiced method blocks other procedures, and Functional Fixedness, where an object's conventional function hides properties supporting another use. Both retain distinct units of fixation and intervention batteries.

Clarity¶
The abstraction separates inability from inaccessible ability. Missing knowledge should remain missing across presentations; fixation should change when the representation or search order changes. It also separates deliberate satisficing from alternatives that never enter comparison.
Manages Complexity¶
Water-jar perseveration, candle-box failure, design-example copying, expert blindness, and premature diagnostic closure reduce to four questions: which representation was retrieved first, which alternative it excluded, whether the solver can access that alternative elsewhere, and which minimal manipulation reopens search.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Strengthening the familiar cue should worsen performance on variants requiring another representation while preserving or improving routine performance. Neutral redescription, component separation, changed ordering, delay, or mandatory alternative generation should restore performance without adding knowledge. If none does, fixation becomes a weaker diagnosis.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Across cognitive problem solving, design, diagnosis, and expertise, learned retrieval priority, suppressed alternatives, and representation-sensitive release recur as the same mechanism. Remove the solver, task, and behavioral intervention and only Category Retrieval Lock In remains; that substrate-removal boundary makes this node domain-specific.
