A mutually reinforcing rivalry in which opposing organizations gain attention, legitimacy or resources by attacking one another while avoiding decisive defeat.

Promoting adversaries is an antagonistic feedback loop whose participants benefit from the persistence of conflict.[1] Each side's attack validates the other's threat narrative and mobilizes supporters, so bounded escalation increases both parties' salience while eliminating the opponent would end the benefit. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of strategic interaction.
