Psychophysical Scaling¶
Relate controlled changes in measurable physical stimulation to changes in sensation or discrimination by fitting a modality-specific response law over an explicitly bounded operating range.
Core Idea¶
Psychophysical scaling is the family of empirical constructions that relate a measurable physical stimulus continuum to an operational measure of sensation or discrimination. A law in this family specifies the stimulus attribute and unit, the perceptual response procedure, a fitted functional relation or local sensitivity rule, a modality-specific parameter, and the range over which the relation is trusted. The point is not merely that perception changes with stimulation, but that the mapping is measured well enough to predict discriminability or felt magnitude and to calibrate an instrument or interface.
Broad Use¶
The abstraction organizes sensory psychophysics, magnitude estimation, difference-threshold experiments, clinical sensory testing, and perceptual calibration in displays, audio, haptics, taste, smell, pain, and other modalities.
Clarity¶
It separates the shared measurement architecture from the mathematical form of any one law. Weber's Law measures how a difference threshold scales with baseline intensity; Stevens's Power Law fits perceived magnitude directly. They belong to one domain family but remain different species.
Manages Complexity¶
The family reduces a collection of modality-specific experiments to fixed roles: define the physical continuum, operationalize the perceptual response, sample a valid range, estimate the law and its parameter, test boundaries, and use the result for prediction or calibration.
Abstract Reasoning¶
A psychophysical scaling claim is credible only if both axes and the operating range are explicit. Use fitted parameters to predict unmeasured points inside that range, compare modalities without assuming their parameters match, and treat systematic edge deviations as evidence that threshold, saturation, adaptation, or another mechanism has taken over.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The apparatus transfers intact across sensory modalities because the perceiver, controlled stimulus, response procedure, fitted relation, and validity range remain present. Remove the perceiving system and operational response and the identity disappears; what remains belongs to generic Measurement and the mathematical form used by the particular child law.
Example¶
A display engineer varies luminance, collects magnitude estimates of brightness, fits the stimulus-response curve within the nonsaturated range, and inverts it to produce more perceptually uniform control steps. The same family architecture can measure an auditory difference threshold even though the fitted law and response procedure differ.

Distinction from Neighbors¶
Psychophysical Scaling is not generic Measurement, because it fixes physical-stimulus and perceptual-response roles. It is not one claim that all senses are logarithmic or power-law. Weber's Law and Stevens's Power Law are distinct children with different dependent variables and mathematical forms.
