Punctuated gradualism¶
An evolutionary tempo hypothesis in which a lineage shows long relative stasis interrupted by comparatively rapid morphological change without requiring branching speciation.
Core Idea¶
The model occupies a boundary between phyletic gradualism and punctuated equilibrium: change is concentrated in geologically brief intervals yet can occur within one continuing lineage rather than at cladogenesis. Stabilizing conditions maintain a morphological regime for long intervals, altered selection or developmental response drives a rapid directional transition and the lineage settles into a new period of relative stasis. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
