Range Property¶
Treat a nonscalar property as equally possessed when an entity's degree of a related scalar property falls within a specified range, while requiring an independent reason why that range and within-range indifference are normatively relevant.
Core Idea¶
A range property is a nonscalar property that an entity has in virtue of its degree on one or more underlying scalar dimensions falling within a specified range. The underlying capacity may admit more and less; possession of the range property does not. If (S(x)) measures an entity's degree of some scalar property and (N) is the relevant set of degrees, then the simplest recognition schema is
Two entities can therefore have different values of (S) and nevertheless possess (R_N) equally. A range may be everything above a lower threshold, an interval with both lower and upper bounds, or a region in a multidimensional capacity space. The range itself, not merely a single cutoff, is constitutive.[1][2]
John Rawls introduced the term into modern political philosophy when addressing the basis of equal justice. People differ in their capacities for a conception of the good and for a sense of justice, but Rawls treated moral personality as a range property: once the relevant minimum is met, greater capacity does not confer a greater claim to the guarantees of justice. His geometric illustration was the interior of a unit circle. Interior points have different coordinates and distances from the center, yet no interior point is more inside the circle than another.[3]
The construction does not prove that a proposed boundary is morally important. It separates three questions that are often conflated: what graded feature underlies the property, which degrees count as within the range, and why possession of the resulting binary property should govern status or treatment. A defensible range-property argument must answer all three. Merely drawing a cutoff and calling everyone above it equal restates the desired conclusion unless an independent normative rationale makes within-range differences irrelevant.[4][5]
Structural Signature¶
A range-property analysis contains the following roles:
- A subject domain (X): the beings or objects to which the property may apply.
- An underlying scalar basis (S): a capacity or feature admitting ordered degrees. There may be several scalar dimensions, represented by a vector \(\mathbf S(x)\).
- A specified range (N): a subset of the scalar or multidimensional value space. A lower-threshold interval \([t,\infty)\) is common but not mandatory.
- A nonscalar property (R_N): membership in the specified range. Relative to the chosen range and measurement convention, an entity either possesses it or does not.
- A grounding claim: (x) has (R_N) because its actual degree (S(x)) lies in (N). The binary property must not float free of its scalar basis.
- An equality claim: entities within (N) possess (R_N) equally even though their degrees of (S) differ.
- A relevance claim: in normative applications, (R_N), rather than the exact degree of (S), is alleged to govern some status, entitlement, standing, or form of treatment.
- A range justification: an account of why the selected boundary and the disregard of within-range variation are appropriate for the stated purpose.
- An outside-range disposition: an explicit account of what follows for entities below, above, or otherwise outside (N). Silence here can hide exclusion rather than resolve it.
For multiple bases, a formalization may be
where (N) need not be rectangular. This notation expresses membership only. It does not establish that (N) is natural, non-arbitrary, accurately measurable, morally relevant, or exhaustive of the grounds of status.
A practical recognition test asks: Does the proposal identify a graded basis, a range in that basis, a binary higher-level property grounded by range membership, and a reason to treat exact within-range differences as irrelevant to the conclusion? Without the grounding relation, the case may be a bare binary property. Without a reason for indifference, it is merely a threshold classification. Without a status or equality problem, it may be mathematically isomorphic but not a literal use of the philosophical abstraction.
What It Is Not¶
A range property is not simply a scalar property. Rationality, strength, income, and measured capacity can vary by degree. The associated property of falling within a specified rationality or capacity range is binary, even while its basis remains graded.
It is not a threshold value. A threshold is a boundary in the scalar space; the range property is the nonscalar property conferred by membership in a range bounded by one or more thresholds. A threshold can trigger a graded response, while a range property specifically records yes-or-no membership.
It is not every binary property. Kirby distinguishes a genuine range property from a “bare property.” A bare property may be nonscalar without being possessed because a scalar degree falls inside a specified range. If personhood is asserted as primitive or grounded in something other than scalar-range membership, it is not made a range property merely by being all-or-nothing.[2]
It is not basic equality itself. Basic equality is the normative claim that persons have equal fundamental status. A range property is one proposed kind of basis for that equality. One can endorse basic equality while rejecting range-property grounds, or define a range property without accepting that it grounds equal status.
It is not formal equality, equity, or equal distribution. Formal equality instructs like treatment of relevantly like cases. Equity introduces context-sensitive correction of a rule. Distributive equality concerns shares of goods. A range-property account instead tries to explain why differing beings count as equals in a particular status-bearing respect.
It is not a proof that capacities above the cutoff cease to matter for every purpose. Waldron's “scintillation” emphasizes movement between shared range status and individual particularity: equal fundamental standing can coexist with relevant differences in need, ability, responsibility, or circumstance.[6]
Scope of Application¶
The home use is the philosophical problem of the basis of moral or political equality. Rawls asks which features of human beings make the principles of justice apply to them as free and equal persons. His answer uses the minimum moral powers needed to participate in a system of social cooperation. Later authors examine rationality, autonomy, moral agency, the ability to love, agency, humanity, and related candidates as possible range properties.[3][6]
The abstraction also structures disputes about citizenship and political status. A polity may treat adult citizenship as a binary standing associated with age or competence ranges, even though the underlying capacities vary. Such social statuses show that range properties can be institutionally constructed rather than discovered as natural kinds. That fact can defend their reality as higher-level properties while also shifting the justificatory burden: the boundary must be publicly justified and administered, not mistaken for a sharp natural joint.[7][8]
Animal ethics and disability theory expose the outside-range problem. If capacity within a range grounds full status, then animals, infants, people with profound cognitive disabilities, or people with temporarily impaired capacities may fall outside it. Responses invoke potential, typical capacities, relationships, social construction, species membership, or independent grounds of concern. Those are substantive additions; they cannot be smuggled into the formal range definition.[9][10]
The abstraction can be used analytically outside moral equality—for example, to describe membership in a jurisdiction or the interior of a geometric region—but these examples illuminate structure rather than establish cross-domain prime status. In mathematics and administrative practice, the same form is ordinarily recognized as set membership, interval membership, classification, eligibility, or thresholding, not as a range property in Rawls's sense.
Clarity¶
Range-property language clarifies how equality can be asserted without claiming empirical sameness. “All citizens are equal” need not mean that they have equal intelligence, virtue, skill, or need. It can mean that they share a nonscalar status grounded in meeting conditions that are not themselves equally realized.
The language also forces an argument to reveal its levels. At the lower level are variable capacities. At the higher level is membership in a range. At the normative level is the consequence attached to that membership. A disagreement may concern measurement of the capacities, shape of the range, grounding of the higher-level property, or relevance of the property to rights. Treating these as separate questions prevents critics of a boundary from being misread as denying equality itself.
Finally, it supplies a sharp diagnostic. If an author says that degree matters up to a cutoff but not above it, ask what changes at the boundary, why larger within-range differences are irrelevant, and whether entities just outside the range receive radically different treatment. Those questions reveal whether the range-property move explains equality or merely labels it.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction compresses a heterogeneous population into a status-bearing class without pretending that all individual variation disappears. It lets a theory retain fine-grained facts for some decisions while deliberately bracketing them for fundamental standing. Institutions can assign equal rights without ranking every citizen's rationality, virtue, or social contribution.
This compression is valuable because a fully scalar status scheme would require continuous interpersonal measurement and would invite hierarchies based on contested capacities. Carter's opacity-respect account gives the bracketing an independent rationale: beyond a minimum of agency, respect requires abstaining from assessing and acting on comparative differences in persons' basic agential capacities.[4]
Compression also creates risk. A single bit can hide measurement uncertainty, multidimensional tradeoffs, development over time, and unequal consequences of error. The abstraction manages complexity only when the purpose-specific loss of information is justified and the omitted variation remains available where it legitimately matters.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Range-property reasoning supports several disciplined inferences:
- Membership inference: if \(S(x)\in N\), then (x) has (R_N).
- Equal-possession inference: if \(S(x),S(y)\in N\), then (x) and (y) possess (R_N) equally, despite \(S(x)\ne S(y)\).
- Limited irrelevance inference: if an independently justified rule makes (R_N) the sole basis for status (T), then differences in (S) within (N) do not alter (T). The qualification is essential.
- Boundary challenge: compare entities just inside and just outside (N). A major status discontinuity from a minor scalar difference demands justification.
- Exclusion audit: identify who is outside (N), whether exclusion tracks the theory's stated purpose, and which independent duties remain.
- Robustness test: vary the boundary and measurement error. If status assignments change dramatically under plausible specifications, the range-property account is fragile.
- Multidimensional test: determine whether one capacity can compensate for another and whether the chosen region (N) expresses that theory rather than an arbitrary aggregation.
These inferences distinguish a formal construction from a successful normative argument. The function (R_N) is easy to define. Defending its role in justice is the hard part.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The structural skeleton transfers cleanly to eligibility rules, certification, legal adulthood, diagnostic categories, membership classes, and tolerance bands: a graded input is mapped into a nonscalar membership state. This transfer helps a philosopher inspect hidden choices about boundaries, error, and within-class variation.
Transfer in the opposite direction is more limited. An engineer's tolerance band shows how range membership works, but it does not show that equal moral status should be grounded in a capacity range. A legal age rule can be justified as an administrable proxy even when no natural transformation occurs at midnight; a moral-personality boundary carries a more fundamental burden. The same mathematical map can serve very different kinds of justification.
The transferable lesson is therefore procedural: specify the basis, range, membership property, attached consequence, and reason for ignoring within-range differences. The philosophical name should not be exported merely because another practice uses a cutoff.
Examples¶
Rawlsian moral personality¶
Let (S_1(x)) be a person's capacity for a conception of the good and (S_2(x)) the capacity for a sense of justice. Rawls proposes a minimum range sufficient for moral personality. People can possess both capacities to unequal degrees above the minimum yet have moral personality equally and be owed the guarantees of justice. This is the canonical case because scalar capacities, nonscalar status, and equal normative consequence are all explicit.[3]
It is also the canonical contested case. Why should a small difference across the minimum matter greatly while a large difference above it does not? Why are these capacities rather than sentience, vulnerability, relationship, or another feature decisive? Rawls notes that vagueness in application does not imply that rights should vary with natural capacity, but critics argue that the range still needs an independent moral rationale.[11][4]
Interior of the unit circle¶
For a point (p=(x,y)), define (S(p)=x2+y2) and (N=[0,1)). Then (R_N(p)) is the property of being inside the unit circle. Points with (S=0.01) and (S=0.99) differ in position and radial distance, but each is equally an interior point. The example demonstrates binary membership grounded in a scalar range. It does not by itself prove that any moral status should work the same way.
Citizenship and voting eligibility¶
Citizenship is a nonscalar legal status even though residence duration, civic knowledge, participation, and attachment vary. Voting eligibility may additionally use an age threshold. Such examples show how institutions construct higher-level statuses from administrable conditions. They also expose a boundary: age eligibility is a rule that can be defended by administrability and political equality without claiming that maturity changes discontinuously at eighteen. The case is a useful analogue, not automatically a Rawlsian basis of basic equality.
Negative case: graded merit award¶
Suppose a scholarship requires a score above 80, but awards increase continuously with every point above 80. Eligibility is binary, yet the target benefit is not possessed equally within the range. This is a threshold eligibility rule, not a range-property argument for equal award status. The example catches the common error of treating any cutoff as making all subsequent differences irrelevant.
Negative case: primitive personhood¶
A theory may hold that personhood is an irreducible, all-or-nothing property not grounded in scalar capacities. Even if all persons possess it equally, it is a bare nonscalar property rather than a range property under the grounding definition. Binary form alone is insufficient.[2]
Structural Tensions¶
Boundary precision versus normative significance. A crisp range makes classification administrable, but the underlying capacities and their measurement may be vague. The sharper the status consequence, the stronger the demand to explain why the boundary has that significance.
Within-range equality versus scalar relevance. The scalar basis must matter enough to ground the range property, yet variation in it must cease to matter for the attached status once inside the range. Critics ask how the same feature can be foundational and then normatively ignored. Defenders need a purpose-specific reason, such as social cooperation or opacity respect.[12]
Inclusion versus explanatory force. A demanding range may explain why a capacity matters but exclude many humans. A permissive range may include nearly everyone but become too thin to explain robust rights. Disability and animal cases make this tradeoff visible.
Natural discovery versus social construction. Treating a range as a natural joint can disguise institutional choice. Treating it as constructed can make the status defensible as a social achievement but may weaken claims that it is grounded in antecedent human nature.
Compression versus particularity. Equal fundamental standing requires bracketing some differences; just treatment in concrete cases may require attention to need, impairment, history, or responsibility. Waldron's scintillation names the need to move between common status and individual difference rather than freezing attention at either level.[6]
Stable status versus dynamic capacity. Capacities develop, fluctuate, and can be temporarily lost. A theory must say whether actual, potential, typical, past, or relational capacity governs membership and avoid unstable fundamental status without argument.
Structural–Framed Character¶
Range Property is strongly framed. Its scalar-to-binary mapping is structurally explicit, but its canonical recognition depends on the political-philosophy problem of grounding basic equality. A five-part assessment is:
- Vocabulary travels: 0.75 framed. “Range property,” “moral personality,” “basis of equality,” and “moral status” are specialist terms; other fields say interval membership, thresholding, or eligibility.
- Evaluative weight: 1.00 framed. The central use concerns which differences may affect rights and standing.
- Institutional origin: 0.75 framed. Rawlsian justice and later equality debates supply the mature identity, although the formal map is not institution-specific.
- Human-practice bound: 1.00 framed. The canonical problem is treatment of persons and other morally considerable beings.
- Import versus recognize: 0.75 framed. Calling a tolerance band a range property usually imports philosophical terminology rather than naming that practice's own category.
Aggregate: 0.85 framed. The structural core is real, but it is already expressed more generally by Classification and Threshold. The retained node names the philosophical package of grounding, equal possession, status relevance, and justificatory burden.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
The structural core is a map from a scalar value or vector to binary membership in a specified region. This core is portable and can be written as an indicator function. It explains how unequal lower-level values can support an equally possessed higher-level property.
The domain accent adds the philosophical work: a proposed basis of persons' equal moral or political status; a claim that within-range differences should not affect that status; a demand for independent justification of the range; and scrutiny of exclusions, disability, animal standing, social construction, and the relation between shared status and individual particularity.
Removing that accent leaves threshold classification, which the live catalog already contains. Removing the structural core leaves an unsupported affirmation of equality. Range Property survives as domain-specific precisely because it binds the formal map to this recurring justificatory problem.
Instantiates / Related Primes¶
Range Property most directly specializes Classification. It assigns entities to a nonscalar membership class using an explicit rule based on scalar-range membership. The rule turns continuous or multidimensional variation into a reusable status category.
It also uses Threshold when the range is bounded by a lower or upper cutoff. Threshold is not the whole identity because a range may have multiple bounds and because the candidate concerns the property conferred by membership rather than the boundary itself.
It is related to Equity only through normative subject matter. The live Equity prime concerns contextual correction of general rules; a range-property account creates a uniform status class and may itself be criticized for ignoring context.
It is related to Relation because a unary property can be modeled as set membership, and to Criteria of Individuation because status categories require membership criteria. Neither supplies the scalar-basis-to-nonscalar-grounding argument.
