Rat running¶
The use of residential or otherwise unintended minor routes as shortcuts around congestion on designated main roads.
Core Idea¶
The practice may use public roads or impermissible private cut-throughs, travel-time advantage varies dynamically, navigation apps can amplify flows and an alternative route is not rat running when it is part of the intended network hierarchy. Drivers optimize perceived trip time by diverting through locally connected streets; individually beneficial rerouting transfers traffic noise delay and crash exposure to routes not designed for through movement and can create feedback with congestion controls. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
