Reflexive modernization¶
A sociological theory that advanced modern institutions increasingly confront, contest and reorganize themselves around the unintended risks and side effects produced by modernization.
Core Idea¶
Reflexive modernization describes modernity becoming an object and problem for its own institutions as their consequences undermine inherited assumptions. Industrial success generates transboundary risks and social changes that escape routine control, prompting actors to question expertise, identities and institutions and create subpolitical forms of reform. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of sociology. It is self-transforming phase of modernity driven by manufactured risk and institutional side effects.
