Publisher Relation¶
Collapse a long chain of authorship, review, and production into one resolvable metadata handle naming the agent who effected a resource's release, so every downstream governance question routes to the same addressable accountable party.
Core Idea¶
The publisher relation is the metadata pattern, formalized in Dublin Core as dc:publisher, that links a released resource to the agent responsible for making it available — the party that effected the release, stands accountable for the released form, and serves as the addressable point for questions about rights, errata, withdrawal, or successors. It is distinct from authorship (who originated the content) and contribution (who participated): it records the act of release, not creation.
Scope of Application¶
The publisher relation lives wherever an information product is put under stewarded release into a distribution channel and downstream parties need a single addressable responsible party.
- Library and serials cataloging — the home turf: the imprint recorded as a primary searchable facet.
- Research-data repositories — Zenodo and Dryad as formal publisher distinct from the depositor.

Clarity¶
Recording the publisher relation as its own field separates the release event from the creation event — a distinction casual description erases but cataloging depends on, since the two routinely diverge. Its deeper clarity is collapsing a long, opaque chain of authorship and production into a single addressable handle, turning accountability from something inferred into something queryable.
Manages Complexity¶
Behind any released artifact stands a chain of contributors and a heterogeneous set of downstream parties needing to act on the released form. The relation compresses both the chain and its recurring reconstruction into one named, resolvable handle: every governance query resolves to the same address regardless of consumer or time. It also fixes the field's branch against its neighbors — release event versus creation event.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The relation licenses diagnostic reasoning (routing any stewardship question to the recorded publisher rather than reconstructing the chain), boundary-drawing (separating release from creation and routing by the correct field where they diverge), field-quality diagnosis (distinguishing the machinery from the governance and predicting where the handle fails to bind), and interventionist order-of-events reasoning (record the handle at release time so downstream routing becomes a lookup).
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within bibliographic-metadata governance the relation transfers as the same pattern across cataloging, repositories, government documents, and package registries — the substrate is genuinely shared. Beyond it the substrate-independent force is carried by the primes it intersects — authority, accountability, delegation_of_authority, publish_subscribe — plus the deeper gatekeeping role-shape. Carry those cross-domain; the dc:publisher machinery is bibliographic furniture.
