Rent-Seeking Trap¶
The public-choice pathology in which institutional rules make the marginal return on capturing an existing rent exceed the return on producing new value, so effort is dissipated into contests over distribution — self-reinforcing where the rent-defending coalitions persist and manufacture further rents.
Core Idea¶
A rent-seeking trap is the public-choice pathology in which agents direct resources toward capturing an existing rent — a licence, monopoly franchise, tariff allocation, budget line — rather than creating value, and the rules that make capture profitable are self-reinforcing. The structural commitment is that the marginal return on extraction exceeds the marginal return on production. Resources spent competing for the rent are the Tullock rectangle, a deadweight loss. The trap aspect is self-reinforcement: coalitions built to capture a rent persist and redirect toward further rents.
Scope of Application¶
The trap operates wherever an institutional rule creates a concentrated, contestable rent and the return on capturing it tops the return on producing.

Clarity¶
The clarifying force is that it splits competition into two kinds that look identical but have opposite welfare signs: productive competition pushes the frontier outward, extractive competition merely decides who captures a fixed rent. Naming the trap lets a practitioner ask "is this effort creating new value or only redistributing a fixed one?" It gives the loss a measurable form, the Tullock rectangle, and its trap qualifier localizes the failure in the rules rather than the agents' character — pointing the lever at rule design.
Manages Complexity¶
A wildly miscellaneous roster of capture behaviors — lobbying, patent fences, cartel maintenance, medallion trading, prestige games — compresses to one inequality: the rules have made the return on capture exceed the return on production. The verdict is read off the rent's size, the contest's cost, and its diffusion, with the loss quantified as the Tullock rectangle. The trap adds one switch: whether the capture coalitions persist and redirect, making the equilibrium self-funding.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The reasoning turns on the extraction-versus-production inequality and the self-reinforcement switch. A diagnostic move reclassifies energetic competition as productive or extractive and infers the trap from the rule; an interventionist move changes the rule so capture stops out-returning production; a boundary-drawing move separates it from commons depletion and checks the trap switch; and counterfactual reasoning quantifies the loss as the Tullock rectangle against the productive frontier.
