Representativeness Heuristic¶
Judge how probable, frequent, or generatively plausible an outcome is by how closely it resembles a category prototype or expected process pattern, so typicality silently replaces the target quantity and becomes systematically misleading when base rates, sample size, or set inclusion disagree.
Core Idea¶
The representativeness heuristic estimates probability, frequency, or category membership from how closely a case resembles a prototype or an expected generating process. Typicality silently substitutes for the target quantity, creating predictable errors when base rates, sample size, or set inclusion disagree with resemblance. There is a probabilistic or categorical target, a salient prototype or process image, a resemblance judgment, substitution of that judgment for the target computation, and insufficient correction for formal constraints.
Scope of Application¶
Diagnosis, hiring, investing, forecasting, and everyday judgment preserve one human cognitive shortcut. The domains vary; the psychological mechanism does not become substrate-neutral when moved among them.
Clarity¶
Attribute substitution is the broader mechanism. Base-rate neglect and conjunction fallacy can be consequences. Availability substitutes ease of retrieval rather than resemblance. Stereotyping is a social-category application but not the entire heuristic.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction turns a scattered family of cases into one role-based test: identify the required elements, test their relation, and reject the classification when a constitutive commitment is missing.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Use the structural signature rather than the label, then challenge the nearest counterexample. Using resemblance as evidence inside a correctly calibrated Bayesian classifier is not the heuristic if base rates and likelihoods remain explicitly integrated.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Diagnosis, hiring, investing, forecasting, and everyday judgment preserve one human cognitive shortcut. The domains vary; the psychological mechanism does not become substrate-neutral when moved among them.
Example¶
A case qualifies only when the definition and every load-bearing role remain present. Using resemblance as evidence inside a correctly calibrated Bayesian classifier is not the heuristic if base rates and likelihoods remain explicitly integrated.
Relationships to Other Abstractions¶
Current abstraction Representativeness Heuristic Domain-specific
Parents (2) — more general patterns this builds on
-
Representativeness Heuristic is a kind of Attribute Substitution Domain-specific
Representativeness is attribute substitution specialized to replacing a hard probability, frequency, or category-likelihood target with felt typicality.
-
Representativeness Heuristic is a kind of Heuristic Prime
Representativeness is a heuristic specialized to using resemblance as a rapid, ecologically contingent rule for probabilistic judgment.
Children (3) — more specific cases that build on this
-
Base Rate Fallacy Domain-specific is part of Representativeness Heuristic
Base-rate fallacy contains representativeness because resemblance or vivid likelihood evidence supplies the proxy estimate that displaces the prior.
-
Conjunction Fallacy Domain-specific is part of Representativeness Heuristic
Conjunction fallacy contains representativeness because the more stereotype-matching scenario is ranked by resemblance instead of probability.
-
Gambler's Fallacy Domain-specific is part of Representativeness Heuristic
Gambler's fallacy contains representativeness because a short streak that looks unlike the expected long-run pattern is treated as evidence that reversal is due.
Hierarchy paths (3) — routes to 3 parentless roots
- Representativeness Heuristic → Attribute Substitution → Relevance Substitution
- Representativeness Heuristic → Heuristic → Trade-offs → Constraint
- Representativeness Heuristic → Heuristic → Approximation → Representation → Abstraction
Not to Be Confused With¶
Attribute substitution is the broader mechanism. Base-rate neglect and conjunction fallacy can be consequences. Availability substitutes ease of retrieval rather than resemblance. Stereotyping is a social-category application but not the entire heuristic.
