Restoration Baseline Error¶
Diagnose a restoration that targets a historical reference state no longer viable under shifted conditions — the error of treating the prior state as a fixed property of the place rather than a function of contemporaneous conditions that have themselves moved.
Core Idea¶
Restoration baseline error is the conservation-ecology pathology in which an intervention — re-vegetation, channel rebuild, species reintroduction, coastal reconstruction — targets a historical reference state no longer viable under current conditions. The error is treating the prior state as a fixed property of the place rather than a function of contemporaneous conditions (climate, hydrology, sediment supply, neighbouring biota) that have shifted. The intervention may succeed visually at completion, then fail as the substrate ceases to support it. Its structural diagnostic is a viability gap between the chosen reference and what the substrate will sustain.

Naming the error prises apart the goal of restoration (return to the prior state) from the viability of that goal under conditions that now obtain. "Restore it" reads as well-posed but smuggles in an untested assumption — that the substrate still supports the target — which a culturally foregrounded reference state suppresses. It also makes legible the silent failure: visual success at completion followed by collapse, decoupling reaching a state from sustaining it, with shifting-baselines drift compounding the error.

Restoration failures look like a miscellany of unrelated mishaps, each with its own ecology.
