Review

A structured evaluative artifact linking four slots — an identified evaluator, a bounded object under evaluation, a verdict, and a warrant — into a persisted, addressable record, so evaluative testimony becomes aggregable, citable, and revisable.

Core Idea

A review is a structured evaluative artifact that links four elements — an identified evaluator, a bounded object under evaluation, a judgment (often quantified on a shared rating scale), and the reasoning or experience offered as warrant for that judgment — into a persisted, addressable, and typically public record. The structural commitment is the linkage, held together and made citable: separating the evaluator from the evaluated object (so the review is attributable), separating the verdict from the warrant (so either can be assessed independently), and separating both from the underlying experience being reported (so the artifact can circulate after that experience is gone). Schema.org's Review type makes this explicit as a data schema: every Review has an author, an itemReviewed, a reviewRating, and a reviewBody; the schema is a formalisation of a structure that recurs across product reviews, scientific peer-review reports, software code-review comments, appellate-court opinions, tenure letters, and published cultural criticism.

The review artifact is what makes evaluative testimony aggregable and citable: because each review carries a common schema of slots, a platform can collect many reviews, weight them, deduplicate them, compute summary statistics, and surface the distribution — the infrastructure of recommender systems, reputation scores, and academic meta-analysis all depends on this typed artifact form. Without the artifact, evaluative opinion scatters across conversation, memory, and informal endorsement and resists systematic synthesis. The review's persistent form also does something the underlying evaluation alone cannot: it creates a stable referent that later evaluators, editors, or courts can examine, argue with, cite, or overturn — it makes the judgment revisable rather than simply authoritatively expressed once and forgotten.

Structural Signature

Sig role-phrases:

  • the evaluator — the identified author whose stake, expertise, and track record bear on the review's weight
  • the object under evaluation — the bounded item or experience being judged, held distinct from the evaluator
  • the verdict — the summary judgment, often quantified on a shared rating scale
  • the warrant — the reasoning, evidence, or experience cited in support, separable from and independently assessable against the verdict
  • the linkage — the structural commitment binding the four slots together into one citable whole (the affordances come from the slots being held apart yet joined)
  • the persisted referent — the addressable, public record the review becomes, distinct from the fleeting experience it reports
  • the aggregation context — the population of slot-uniform co-reviews against which any one is weighted, deduplicated, and normalized into a distribution
  • the revisability affordance — because the judgment is a stable record, later evaluators or courts can examine, cite, argue with, or overturn it rather than accept it once and forget
  • the institutional precondition — the gate on the whole construct: a human practice that crystallizes evaluations into attributable persisted records; absent it (natural selection, a price signal) there is no review

What It Is Not

  • Not the act of evaluating. A review is the persisted, addressable account, not the inner appraising that produced it. The concept separates three things informal talk fuses: the experience being reported, the evaluation (the appraising itself), and the review (the crystallized record of it). The artifact's affordances — aggregability, citation, contestability — belong to the record, not to the mental act, which leaves no slots to operate on.
  • Not merely an opinion. What distinguishes a review from a loose opinion is the typed, attributable structure: a known evaluator, a bounded object under evaluation, a verdict, and a warrant, persisted as a citable record. An unattributed verdict with no warrant, or an appraisal scattered across conversation and memory, lacks the slots and so is precisely not a review — it cannot be synthesized or contested as one.
  • Not the rating alone. The verdict is one slot, not the whole. Verdict and warrant are separable and independently assessable: a confident five-star score backed by a flimsy warrant and a three-star score backed by careful reasoning can be told apart. Collapsing a review to its star count discards exactly the warrant that lets the verdict be argued with on its grounds rather than accepted or dismissed wholesale.
  • Not a guarantee of correctness. A review structures support, attribution, and provenance; it does not certify that its judgment is true or right. Its work is documentary — making evaluative testimony attributable, citable, and revisable — not validating the verdict. A well-formed review can be wrong; the artifact makes the judgment contestable, which is the opposite of certifying it.
  • Not present wherever evaluation occurs. The construct requires an institutional precondition: a human (or human-built) practice that crystallizes evaluations into attributable, persisted, addressable records. Natural systems evaluate in abundance — selection, a market price signal — but contain no reviews, because there is no attributing author, no citable record, and no rating scale. Reading "review" onto such processes imports the genre where its precondition fails.

Scope of Application

Because a review is an artifact-type and documentary genre rather than a causal mechanism, it applies literally wherever its one precondition holds — a human (or human-built) practice that crystallizes evaluations into attributable, persisted, addressable records with a verdict and warrant; the fields below are real instances of the same four-slot construct, not metaphor. The boundary is genre-reach versus over-reading: the act of evaluating that underlies it (which recurs even in natural systems with no author or record) belongs to the parent abstractions cognitive_appraisal and evidence, not here.

  • E-commerce and consumer platforms — Amazon, Yelp, and Tripadvisor reviews (author + itemReviewed + reviewRating + reviewBody), the substrate Schema.org's Review type encodes and the bedrock of recommender systems and reputation scores.
  • Scientific peer review — signed or anonymous reviewer reports attached to manuscripts, with explicit recommend/revise/reject verdicts.
  • Software code review — comments and approve/block decisions on a diff, with gatekeeping mechanics (comments → revisions → approval) mapping slot-for-slot onto editorial review.
  • Academic appointment — external tenure letters that follow a standard evidentiary form.
  • Legal and quasi-judicial settings — appellate opinions as a formalized review artifact with their own conventions (issue, holding, reasoning, disposition).
  • Cultural criticism — published film, book, and restaurant reviews following a recognizable review form.

Clarity

Treating a review as a typed artifact rather than as "an opinion" makes a set of distinctions legible that ordinary evaluative talk runs together. Naming the four slots — evaluator, object under evaluation, judgment, warrant — forces each to be identified and held apart: the review becomes attributable (it is someone's, with a stake and an authority that bear on its weight), its verdict becomes separable from its reasons (a five-star rating with a flimsy warrant and a three-star rating with a careful one can be told apart and assessed independently), and the whole becomes a persisted referent distinct from the fleeting experience it reports on. The sharper question a practitioner can now ask is not "is this a good review?" but "who is the evaluator, what exactly is being evaluated, what is the verdict, and what warrant is offered for it — and do these hang together?" That decomposition is what lets weak reasoning hide behind a confident score be caught, and what lets a verdict be argued with on its grounds rather than accepted or dismissed wholesale.

The artifact framing also clarifies what kind of thing is being operated on when a system aggregates, weights, deduplicates, cites, or overturns evaluations: not raw experience and not the inner act of appraisal, but a stable record with a common schema of slots. This separates three things that informal endorsement collapses — the experience being reported, the evaluation (the appraising itself), and the review (the persisted, addressable account of it) — and locating an operation against the right one of these is what the concept makes possible. A recommender system's statistics, a reputation score, a meta-analysis, an appellate court revisiting a prior holding: each works because the judgment was crystallised into a citable, revisable form, so the practitioner can now ask of any body of evaluative opinion whether it has been rendered into artifacts that can be synthesised and contested, or remains scattered across conversation and memory where it cannot.

Manages Complexity

Evaluative opinion in the wild is unbounded and shapeless: countless appraisals of countless objects, each phrased its own way, embedded in prose, conversation, or memory, with the appraiser, the thing appraised, the verdict, and the grounds all tangled together or simply absent. A system that wants to do anything systematic with that opinion — recommend, rank, score reputation, meta-analyse, cite, overturn — faces a dimensionality with no fixed handle, because there is no common structure to operate on. The review artifact compresses that sprawl by imposing one fixed schema on every instance: four named slots — evaluator, object under evaluation, verdict, warrant — persisted as an addressable record. Once evaluative testimony is rendered into that form, a heterogeneous mass of opinions collapses to a uniform set of typed records, and the operations that were intractable over free-form opinion become routine over the slots. The analyst no longer reads each appraisal whole to extract its meaning; they track the slots — who authored it (and so what weight it carries), what exactly it judged (and so what it can be pooled with), what the verdict was (and so where it falls in a distribution), what warrant backs it (and so whether the verdict is load-bearing or hollow) — and reads aggregation, deduplication, weighting, summary statistics, and contestability straight off that fixed structure. The schema is itself the parameter set: because every review exposes the same slots, a platform can pool ten thousand of them, weight by author, deduplicate by object, and surface the distribution without bespoke handling per opinion, and a later editor or court can cite and argue with a single record because it has a stable referent with known parts rather than a fleeting impression. A body of opinion with no inherent dimensionality becomes a population of records described by a handful of slots, and synthesising or contesting it reduces to operating on those slots rather than re-deriving the meaning of each evaluation from scratch.

Abstract Reasoning

Treating a review as a four-slot typed artifact — evaluator, object under evaluation, verdict, warrant, persisted as an addressable record — licenses reasoning moves that operate on the slots rather than on the raw opinion.

The signature decomposition-and-coherence move runs from a piece of evaluative testimony to a slot-by-slot interrogation, refusing to assess the review whole. The reasoner does not ask "is this a good review?" but identifies each slot and checks whether they hang together: who is the evaluator (and so what stake and authority bear on its weight), what exactly is the object under evaluation (and so what it can be compared or pooled with), what is the verdict, and what warrant is offered. The load-bearing inference is that verdict and warrant are separable and independently assessable — so a confident five-star rating backed by a flimsy warrant and a three-star rating backed by careful reasoning can be told apart, and the reasoner catches weak reasoning hiding behind a strong score by checking whether the verdict is actually load-bearing on its stated grounds rather than asserted. A verdict is thus reasoned about as something to be argued with on its warrant, not accepted or dismissed wholesale.

The credibility-from-attribution move runs from the evaluator slot to the weight a review can carry. The reasoner reasons that attribution is what makes a review assessable at all: absent a known evaluator, the review's credibility collapses toward an average prior, because there is no stake, expertise, or track record to condition on. So the reasoner predicts that an anonymous or unattributed review should be weighted toward the baseline, and that knowing the author's authority and stake is what licenses moving its weight above or below that baseline — making the evaluator slot the first thing the reasoner inspects when deciding how much any single review should move an aggregate.

The aggregation move runs from a population of slot-uniform records to synthesized quantities and predicts the biases of doing so. Because every review exposes the same slots, the reasoner reasons that ten thousand of them can be pooled, weighted by author, deduplicated by object, and summarized as a distribution without bespoke handling per opinion — the operation that recommender systems, reputation scores, and meta-analysis all run. But the reasoner also predicts the systematic distortion: aggregating unweighted reviews privileges the review-prone over the silent majority, so a computed average reflects who chose to write, not the population's experience. The reasoner therefore treats a summary statistic as conditioned on a self-selected sample and predicts selection bias unless the warrant and evaluator slots are used to weight or correct for it.

The boundary-drawing move fixes what kind of object an operation is acting on, separating three things informal endorsement collapses. The reasoner distinguishes the experience being reported, the evaluation (the inner appraising act), and the review (the persisted, addressable account), and reasons that aggregation, deduplication, citation, and overturning operate only on the third — a stable referent with known parts. From this the reasoner predicts that a body of evaluative opinion can be synthesized and contested only to the extent it has been crystallized into artifacts; opinion that remains scattered across conversation and memory has no slots to operate on and resists systematic synthesis. The same persistence is what makes a verdict revisable rather than authoritatively expressed once and forgotten: the reasoner reasons that because the judgment became a citable record, a later editor, platform, or appellate court can examine, argue with, cite, or overturn it — so the reasoner predicts that rendering evaluation into artifact form is the precondition for both pooling it and contesting it later.

Knowledge Transfer

Within the home domain — the practice of producing attributable evaluative records — the review artifact transfers as structure, and the transfer is unusually literal because the four-slot schema is itself the thing that moves. The same skeleton (evaluator, object under evaluation, verdict, warrant, persisted as an addressable record) and the same operations on it (decompose-and-check-coherence, weight-by-attribution, pool-and-deduplicate-and-summarize, contest-and-overturn) recur across product and consumer reviews (Amazon, Yelp, Tripadvisor: author + itemReviewed + reviewRating + reviewBody), scientific peer review (signed or anonymous reports with recommend/revise/reject verdicts), software code review (comments and approve/block decisions on a diff), academic tenure letters (a standard evidentiary form), appellate court opinions (issue, holding, reasoning, disposition), and published cultural criticism. Schema.org's Review type is just one institutional encoding of a structure the others instantiate independently. So a peer-review form maps onto a product-review form slot-for-slot, and code-review gatekeeping (comments → revisions → approval/rejection) maps onto editorial gatekeeping, because the slots are the same — this is genuine structural transfer, not analogy, and it is what lets the same aggregation, weighting, citation, and contestability machinery run over evaluative testimony from any of these fields.

The honest characterization of the "beyond" is not the usual mechanism-within / metaphor-beyond split, because a review is not a causal mechanism — it is an artifact-type, a documentary genre, an instrument-like construct of type (C). A construct of this kind transfers literally wherever its precondition holds, and the precondition is institutional: a human (or human-built) practice in which evaluations are crystallized into attributable, persisted, addressable records. Wherever that holds, the review structure applies for real and its operations are available; the boundary to mark is therefore genre-reach versus over-reading, not literal-versus-figurative. Over-reading takes two forms. First, calling something a "review" when it lacks the slots — an unattributed verdict with no warrant, or raw experience never rendered into a record — claims the artifact's affordances (aggregability, contestability) for something that does not have them; the concept's whole point is that those affordances come from the slots, so an opinion scattered across conversation and memory is precisely not a review and cannot be synthesized as one. Second, imagining reviews where the institutional precondition is absent: natural systems contain evaluation in abundance but contain no reviews, because there is no attributing author, no persisted citable record, no rating scale — so reading "review" onto a biological selection process or a market price signal is over-extension, importing the genre where its precondition fails.

What does travel cross-domain, including into substrates that have no reviews, is (B) the parent abstractions the review composes, not the review artifact itself. The review decomposes into evaluation / cognitive_appraisal (the inner appraising act, which recurs everywhere including in natural systems), evidence and testimony / attestation (the attributable-warrant shape), publication / artifact (persistence and addressability), and rating_scale (when the verdict is quantified). When the cross-domain lesson is about the act of evaluating or the structure of warrant in general, it should be carried by those parents — cognitive_appraisal and evidence are the substrate-portable pieces — while "review," as named, remains the specific publication-shape that evaluation takes in human institutional life. The review's own cargo (the citable four-slot record, the aggregation-and-reputation infrastructure, the Schema.org encoding, the editorial and appellate conventions) is documentary-genre furniture that stays bound to that institutional setting. See Structural Core vs. Domain Accent for why this profile — a culturally codified evidence-artifact rather than a substrate-independent reasoning mechanism — places the entry as a domain-specific genre rather than a prime.

Examples

Canonical

Schema.org's Review type is the structure written out explicitly, and a single product review fills it exactly. Consider an online review of a blender: the author is "J. Morales," a named account with a purchase-verified badge; the itemReviewed is a specific model, the Acme Blend-Pro 700; the reviewRating is 4 on a 1–5 scale; and the reviewBody reads, "Powerful motor crushes ice easily, but the lid seal leaked after two months." Each of the four slots is present and held apart: we know who judged, exactly what was judged, the summary verdict, and the reasons offered for it. Because the record persists at a stable address, the platform can display it, count it toward the model's average, and let later shoppers cite or dispute it — none of which a spoken "I liked my blender" could support.

Mapped back: "J. Morales" is the evaluator whose verified-purchase badge conditions weight; the Blend-Pro 700 is the object under evaluation; the ⅘ is the verdict; the motor-and-leak sentence is the warrant, separable from and testing the verdict. Binding these into one citable record is the linkage creating the persisted referent, which the model's star average draws on as the aggregation context.

Applied / In Practice

Scientific peer review runs this artifact as the gatekeeping infrastructure of research. When a manuscript is submitted, the editor sends it to referees who each produce a structured report: an assessment of a specific paper, a verdict drawn from a fixed set (accept, minor revisions, major revisions, reject), and a detailed warrant — the critique of methods, evidence, and novelty that justifies the recommendation. These reports persist in the journal's editorial system, attributed (if only to the editor) to identifiable reviewers. The editor aggregates several referee verdicts into a decision, authors rebut the warrants point by point, and a rejected paper's judgment can be appealed or overturned. The whole revise-and-resubmit cycle depends on each evaluation existing as a stable, contestable record rather than an off-hand opinion.

Mapped back: The referee is the evaluator, the manuscript the object under evaluation, the accept/revise/reject recommendation the verdict, and the methodological critique the warrant the authors argue against. The persisted report is the persisted referent; the editor pooling multiple referees is the aggregation context; and appeal or rebuttal is the revisability affordance. The journal's editorial apparatus is the institutional precondition that crystallizes appraisal into a citable artifact.

Structural Tensions

T1: Verdict-warrant separability versus aggregation's verdict-only collapse. The artifact's sharpest analytic gift is that verdict and warrant are separable and independently assessable — a confident five-star score with a flimsy warrant can be told from a three-star score with careful reasoning, so weak reasoning hiding behind a strong number gets caught. But the aggregation infrastructure that gives reviews their power — pool ten thousand, weight, deduplicate, compute a distribution — operates on the verdict slot, because the rating is what is numerically poolable, and it discards the warrant that the decomposition told us to check. The tension is that the same schema that makes the warrant inspectable per review makes the verdict the aggregable part, so at scale the systems built on reviews trust exactly the slot the concept warns is hollow without its warrant. Diagnostic: Is the summary being computed from verdicts alone (warrant discarded), or does the aggregation retain and weight by the warrant that makes each verdict load-bearing?

T2: Attribution as credibility versus attribution as chill (the evaluator slot cuts both ways). Filling the evaluator slot is what makes a review assessable at all: a known author's stake, expertise, and track record are what license moving its weight above or below the baseline, and an unattributed verdict collapses toward an average prior. But requiring attribution suppresses candor — which is exactly why scientific peer review is often anonymous, so a referee can be frank about a powerful author's work without reprisal, and why a signed negative review of one's employer or a well-connected figure is chilled. The tension is that the same attribution which conditions credibility discourages the honesty the evaluation was meant to capture, so the evaluator slot trades assessable weight against frank content: anonymize for candor and lose the credibility conditioning; attribute for weight and lose some of the truth. Diagnostic: Does this setting need the credibility that attribution confers, or the candor that anonymity protects — and which distortion (baseline-weighted anonymity or chilled attribution) is more costly here?

T3: Persisted contestability versus fossilized judgment (the stable referent cuts both ways). Persistence is what turns a fleeting appraisal into something citable, poolable, and revisable — a later editor or court can examine, argue with, or overturn it. But the same stable, addressable record fossilizes a judgment: a wrong, stale, or malicious review persists at a fixed address, keeps counting toward an average, and shapes downstream decisions long after its warrant has expired, while "revisable in principle" is often far from "revised in practice" (overturning a published verdict is costly and rare). The tension is that the persistence enabling contestation is the persistence that lets a bad verdict keep doing damage, so the artifact's durability is simultaneously what makes judgments accountable and what makes their errors sticky. Diagnostic: Is the persisted record's contestability actually exercised (verdicts revised when warranted), or is it a stable referent whose stale or wrong judgments keep counting because revision, though possible, does not happen?

T4: Aggregability versus self-selection (the headline value manufactures the bias). Because every review exposes the same slots, ten thousand can be pooled into a distribution without bespoke handling — the affordance recommender systems, reputation scores, and meta-analysis all depend on. But that computed average is conditioned on who chose to write: aggregating unweighted reviews privileges the review-prone (the delighted and the outraged) over the silent majority, so the statistic reflects the writing population, not the experiencing one. The tension is that the artifact's marquee benefit — synthesizing a mass of opinion into a clean number — is exactly the operation that launders a self-selected sample into an apparently representative one, and the more decisions lean on aggregate scores the more they trust a biased draw. Diagnostic: Is the aggregate treated as the population's experience, when it is really conditioned on the self-selected subset who chose to write — and are the evaluator/warrant slots being used to correct for that?

T5: Autonomy versus reduction (documentary genre or the composition of appraisal, evidence, and publication). A review is not a causal mechanism but an artifact-type — a documentary genre — that transfers literally wherever its institutional precondition holds: a human practice crystallizing evaluations into attributable, persisted, addressable records. Across product reviews, peer review, code review, tenure letters, appellate opinions, and criticism the four-slot schema moves slot-for-slot, genuine structural transfer. But what travels to substrates with no reviews is the parents the artifact composes — evaluation / cognitive_appraisal (the inner appraising act, present even in natural selection and price signals), evidence / testimony / attestation (the attributable-warrant shape), publication / artifact (persistence and addressability), and rating_scale (the quantified verdict). Natural systems evaluate in abundance yet contain no reviews, because there is no attributing author, no citable record, no scale. The tension is between a culturally codified evidence-artifact and the substrate-portable appraisal-and-evidence primes it packages; reading "review" onto a selection process over-extends the genre where its precondition fails. Diagnostic: Resolve toward the parents (cognitive_appraisal, evidence) when the lesson is about the act of evaluating or the structure of warrant in general; reserve named review for a human institution that crystallizes evaluation into an attributable, persisted four-slot record.

Structural–Framed Character

The review artifact sits toward the framed side of the spectrum — best read as framed-leaning — a culturally codified documentary genre wholly constituted by human institutional practice, held off the pure framed pole only because its content is a neutral schema rather than a verdict. On human-practice-bound it is as framed as these entries get, in exactly the constitutive sense the framed pole is defined by: the entry names an "institutional precondition" as the gate on the whole construct — absent a human (or human-built) practice that crystallizes evaluations into attributable, persisted, addressable records, there is no review. Strip the practice and, as the entry insists, natural selection and a market price signal still evaluate in abundance but contain no reviews at all, because there is no attributing author, no citable record, no scale — the artifact dissolves the instant its practice is removed. On institutional origin it points firmly framed: Schema.org's Review type, editorial revise-and-resubmit conventions, appellate issue/holding/reasoning/disposition form, peer-review apparatus, and rating scales are all artifacts of specific institutional traditions, not facts of nature. On vocab-travels it points framed with a genre caveat: the four-slot vocabulary (evaluator, object under evaluation, verdict, warrant) does move slot-for-slot across product reviews, peer review, code review, tenure letters, and appellate opinions — but that is genre-reach within the human-institution substrate, and off that substrate the terms lose their referents (no author, no record, no scale), so the vocabulary is pinned to the institutional substrate rather than floating free.

On import-vs-recognize it splits along the genre/substrate line the entry carefully draws: within the practice of producing attributable evaluative records the transfer is literal recognition of the same four-slot structure (the entry stresses this is genuine structural transfer, not analogy), but carried to substrates with no reviews the named artifact does not travel — only the parents it composes do, which is import/reduction, not recognition of "review" itself. The single criterion that keeps this off the pure framed pole is evaluative weight: unlike ad hominem, "review" is not a normative classification that convicts — it is a neutral schema describing how evaluative testimony gets crystallized, so naming something a review rates nothing. The concept is deeply about evaluation, but the artifact-type itself renders no verdict, and that neutrality is what distinguishes framed-leaning from the framed pole.

The portable structural skeleton is an evaluative appraisal bound to an attributable warrant and persisted as an addressable, contestable record — and the genuinely substrate-portable pieces of it are precisely the parent primes the review composes: cognitive_appraisal/evaluation (the inner appraising act, present even in natural selection and price signals) and evidence/testimony/attestation (the attributable-warrant shape), with publication/artifact and rating_scale supplying persistence and the quantified verdict. That composition is what "review" instantiates from those umbrellas, not what makes the named genre itself travel: the cross-substrate reach belongs to appraisal and evidence, while the citable four-slot record, the aggregation-and-reputation infrastructure, the Schema.org encoding, and the editorial and appellate conventions stay bound to institutional life. Its character: a neutral four-slot artifact-schema whose only genuinely portable content is the appraisal-and-evidence primes it packages, constituted by and confined to a human evaluative practice that it dissolves without — a codified documentary genre, framed-leaning rather than a free-floating prime.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent

This section decides why the review is a domain-specific abstraction and not a prime: what is genuinely portable in it is a composition of appraisal-and-evidence primes, while the citable four-slot artifact that makes it a review is documentary-genre furniture requiring an institutional precondition it cannot shed.

What is skeletal (could lift toward a cross-domain prime). Strip the institution and no single primitive remains but a composition of portable pieces: an evaluative appraisal bound to an attributable warrant. The substrate-portable parts are exactly the parents the review packages — cognitive_appraisal/evaluation (the inner appraising act, which recurs everywhere, including in natural selection and market price signals) and evidence/testimony/attestation (the attributable-warrant shape) — with publication/artifact supplying persistence and addressability and rating_scale supplying the quantified verdict when present. Those pieces travel across substrates on their own terms. But that appraisal-plus-warrant composition is the core the review is assembled from, not what makes the review a distinctive thing — and when the cross-domain lesson is about the act of evaluating or the structure of warrant, the parents carry it, not this genre.

What is domain-bound. Everything that makes the concept a review rather than a loose bundle of appraisal and evidence is documentary-genre furniture, and none of it survives where its institutional precondition fails: the four-slot linkage (evaluator, object under evaluation, verdict, warrant) bound into one citable, persisted, addressable record; the aggregation-and-reputation infrastructure (pool, weight, deduplicate, summarize) that recommender systems and meta-analysis run; the revisability affordance by which a later editor or court cites and overturns a judgment; and the codified conventions (Schema.org's Review type, editorial revise-and-resubmit, appellate issue/holding/reasoning/disposition). The decisive test the entry states as its gate: remove the human practice that crystallizes evaluations into attributable persisted records and there is no review — natural selection and a price signal still evaluate in abundance, but they contain no attributing author, no citable record, no scale, so there is nothing for the artifact's affordances to grip. What is left is bare appraisal, not a review; reading "review" onto a selection process imports the genre where its precondition has failed.

Why this does not clear the prime bar. A prime's vocabulary travels and its transfer is recognition of the same mechanism, not analogy. The review is not a causal mechanism but an artifact-type, so its transfer is unusual: it moves literally wherever its institutional precondition holds. Within the practice of producing attributable evaluative records the four-slot schema transfers slot-for-slot — product reviews, scientific peer review, code review, tenure letters, appellate opinions, and cultural criticism instantiate the same structure, genuine transfer, not metaphor. Beyond substrates that have reviews, the named artifact does not travel at all: what reaches processes with no author or record is only the parent primes the review composes. And when the bare structural lesson is needed there, it is already carried, in more general form, by cognitive_appraisal and evidence (with publication/artifact and rating_scale for persistence and quantification). The cross-substrate reach belongs to those parents; the review is their institutional configuration, and its citable-record machinery, reputation infrastructure, and editorial conventions are the domain accent that stays bound to human evaluative life.

Not to Be Confused With

  • A rating (the verdict slot alone). The summary judgment — a star count, a score — which is one of the four slots, not the whole. A review binds the verdict to an evaluator, an object, and a warrant as a citable record; collapsing it to its rating discards the warrant that lets the verdict be argued with on its grounds, and the attribution that conditions its weight. Tell: is it a bare number or score standing alone (rating), or a number joined to an author, an object, and reasons in a persisted record (review)?

  • An opinion / informal endorsement. A loose appraisal scattered across conversation, memory, or a passing remark. What makes a review distinct is the typed, attributable, persisted structure — a known evaluator, a bounded object, a verdict, a warrant, as a citable record; an unattributed verdict with no warrant has no slots to synthesize or contest. Tell: can the appraisal be pooled, weighted, cited, and overturned as a record with known parts (review), or is it a fleeting impression with nothing to operate on (opinion)?

  • Testimony / attestation. The attributable-warrant shape — a party vouching from experience or knowledge — which is a component the review packages, not the whole artifact. Testimony supplies the evaluator-and-warrant relation; the review adds the bounded object slot, the (often quantified) verdict, persistence, and the aggregation-and-revision affordances. Tell: is it a party's attributed account offered as warrant (testimony), or that account bound into a four-slot, aggregable, citable evaluative record (review)?

  • An audit / inspection report. A neighboring evaluative artifact, but one measured against a fixed external standard (compliance, spec, regulation), produced by an accountable and often mandated evaluator, frequently not public and not designed for population-scale aggregation. A review's warrant is the evaluator's own reasoning or experience against an open criterion, and the genre is built for pooling many independent voices. Tell: is the judgment a conformance verdict against a codified standard by a designated auditor (audit), or an attributable appraisal on open grounds meant to be aggregated with others (review)?

  • The cognitive-appraisal + evidence composition (parent). The substrate-portable pieces the review is assembled from — cognitive_appraisal/evaluation (the inner appraising act, present even in natural selection and price signals) and evidence/testimony/attestation (the attributable-warrant shape), with publication/artifact and rating_scale for persistence and the quantified verdict. These travel to substrates that contain no reviews at all. Tell: when the lesson is about the act of evaluating or the structure of warrant in general, the parents carry it (treated in a later section); "review" is their institutional configuration and dissolves where its institutional precondition — a practice crystallizing evaluations into attributable persisted records — is absent.
