Ricardian socialism¶
Interpret early nineteenth-century British socialist arguments that used labor-centered political economy to condemn profit, rent, or interest as deductions from labor's product and to defend alternative distributions or institutions.
Core Idea¶
Ricardian socialism is a retrospective historiographic label for a heterogeneous group of British writers, especially in the 1820s and 1830s, who mobilized labor-centered arguments from classical political economy to criticize profit, rent, and interest as deductions from the product created by labor and to defend reformed ownership, exchange, or cooperative arrangements. Commonly associated figures include William Thompson, Thomas Hodgskin, John Gray, and John Francis Bray. The identity is a bounded argumentative family, not a party with one platform.
The characteristic reasoning begins from production as labor's activity and asks how the resulting product is distributed among workers and owners of capital or land.
Scope of Application¶
