Riepl's Law

Riepl's law, from Wolfgang Riepl's 1913 study of Roman information systems, is the media-historical generalisation that a new communication medium does not displace older media but forces them to re-specialise around niches it cannot fill, producing a layered ecosystem in which both coexist. Complete extinction is rare; what is typical is partial substitution on the axes where the newcomer is superior — speed, reach, scale — followed by the older medium consolidating on depth, permanence, ceremony, and physicality.

Riepl's law lives across the media-studies subfields that narrate and forecast media transitions, held as a contested first heuristic.

The law disciplines the "X is dead" forecasts that greet every new medium, supplying an empirical base-rate and redrawing the question from whether the older medium survives to how its functional boundary is redrawn. It is honest about what it does not claim: general-audience market share typically collapses; only the medium category rarely goes extinct.

Manages Complexity

An unbounded sequence of medium-versus-medium contests collapses to a base-rate plus a directional rule plus one boundary test. The analyst tracks just three parameters: the entrant's strong axes, its weak axes, and whether the contest is inter- or intra-medium.
