Sadler effect¶
The inverse dependence of measured sediment accumulation rate on the duration of the measurement interval, caused by hiatuses and erosion increasingly captured at longer timescales.
Core Idea¶
The Sadler effect is the systematic decrease in apparent sediment accumulation rate as the time span over which thickness is averaged increases. Short intervals preferentially sample active deposition, while longer intervals increasingly include nondeposition and erosional gaps, reducing preserved thickness per unit elapsed time. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of stratigraphy. It is scale-dependent incompleteness of the sedimentary record expressed as an apparent-rate law.
