Scordatura

Core Idea

Scordatura is the deliberate tuning of one or more strings of a string instrument to pitches other than the instrument’s prevailing standard tuning for a work, passage, or performance practice. Retuning changes the physical and geometrical resources of the instrument: which pitches are available as open strings, which chords lie under the hand, which sympathetic resonances are excited, how far the range extends, how string tension colors the sound, and which passages become easier or possible. The term has long been applied to bowed strings, lutes, and related instruments; “cross-tuning” commonly names the same practice in folk fiddle contexts.

Scope of Application

Scordatura occurs in historical and contemporary classical music, folk fiddle traditions, guitar practice, experimental composition, orchestration, notation, and historically informed performance. Its recurrence across instruments does not make every alternative tuning interchangeable. The intended physical effect, notation system, and performer technique must be specified for each case.

For bowed strings, retuning changes open-string resonance and chord shapes. Raising a string increases tension and can change projection, but safe limits depend on instrument and string construction. Lowering a string can extend range or create a darker resonance. Multiple strings may be arranged around a work’s tonal center so open strings and sympathetic vibration support characteristic sonorities.

Clarity

Three coordinates describe an instance: what the normal open strings are, what each string is retuned to, and whether notation represents action or result. Without all three, performers and analysts can confuse the written part, fingered position, and sounding music.

Uniform retuning of every string by the same interval is a special case. Familiar finger patterns then transpose the instrument’s output as a whole.

Manages Complexity

Scordatura relocates difficulty between composition, notation, setup, and execution. A composer can turn awkward stopped chords into open-string sonorities, reach pitches outside ordinary range, or obtain resonances unavailable under standard tuning. Finger-position notation lets the performer reuse learned shapes, but it transfers complexity to the written-to-sounding interpretation and rehearsal process.
