Self-deception¶
A motivated process by which a person sustains a belief or interpretation favorable to desire or identity by selectively attending to, discounting or rationalizing contrary evidence.
Core Idea¶
Self-deception is the formation or maintenance of a distorted belief about oneself or one's situation through motivated handling of evidence. Attention, interpretation, memory and standards of proof shift asymmetrically toward a preferred conclusion, allowing contradictory information to be minimized without an ordinary deliberate lie to oneself. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of psychology. It is motivated intra-agent distortion without requiring a consciously held intention to deceive oneself.
Scope of Application¶
Self-deception belongs to psychology and is useful where the analyst can specify an agent, a proposition or self-conception, available evidence, desires and incentives, attention and memory, belief reports, behavior and conscious or unconscious processing, then evaluate the belief distortion is self-relevant and motivationally patterned, and the account addresses how evidence was available or could have influenced belief.
