Sequential Compliance Technique¶
A requester deliberately stages an initial request or response-producing interaction so that its acceptance, refusal, or apparent concession changes the target's state and raises compliance with a later target request above the rate the later request would obtain alone.
Core Idea¶
A Sequential Compliance Technique is a social-influence strategy in which a requester stages an earlier request or response-producing interaction so the target enters a later decision in a changed psychological or social state. The technique exists when compliance with the later target request exceeds its cold-request baseline because of the sequence.
Foot-in-the-Door opens with a small accepted request and uses self-perception to raise compliance with a larger related ask. Door-in-the-Face opens with a large refused request and uses reciprocal concession and contrast to raise compliance with a smaller ask. The shared architecture makes them siblings; the opposed order and mechanisms keep them distinct.
Scope of Application¶
- Social-influence experiments using cold-request controls.
- Fundraising, sales, negotiation, and political mobilization.
- Recruitment and multi-step interface or consent flows.
- Interpersonal staged requests among socially responsive agents.
The abstraction does not extend to systems that cannot refuse, concede, infer a self-concept, or comply with a request.
Clarity¶
The node changes the unit of analysis from one request to an ordered pair and forces the analyst to recover the target request's cold baseline. It also preserves the mirror distinction: small-accepted-then-large and large-refused-then-small select different mediators and boundary conditions.
Manages Complexity¶
Applications reduce to a compact template: target request, cold compliance rate, designed precursor, expected first response, intervening mediator, and the timing, source, relatedness, magnitude, plausibility, and voluntariness conditions needed to keep that mediator intact.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Holding the target request fixed while varying its precursor tests whether the sequence is causal. Changing source, delay, relatedness, inducement, or request magnitude then discriminates mechanisms. Reversing the asks changes the architecture rather than merely weakening one generic sequence effect.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The architecture transfers literally across human persuasion settings because each has a requester, socially responsive target, precursor response, mediator, and later compliance outcome. Removing those roles leaves only deliberate order changing outcome, which is Sequencing, the structural parent.
Relationships to Other Abstractions¶
Current abstraction Sequential Compliance Technique Domain-specific
Parents (1) — more general patterns this builds on
-
Sequential Compliance Technique is a decomposition of Sequencing Prime
Sequential Compliance Technique is the persuasion-domain form of Sequencing: the requester chooses an order because the same target request produces a different outcome after a state-changing precursor.
Children (2) — more specific cases that build on this
-
Door-in-the-Face Technique Domain-specific is a kind of Sequential Compliance Technique
Door-in-the-Face is a Sequential Compliance Technique specialized to large-refused-then-small ordering, with the requester's retreat producing reciprocal-concession and contrast pressure.
-
Foot-in-the-Door Technique Domain-specific is a kind of Sequential Compliance Technique
Foot-in-the-Door is a Sequential Compliance Technique specialized to small-accepted-then-large ordering, with self-attributed first compliance changing how the later request is evaluated.
