Core Idea

Shading varies tone or color across a depicted form so the image conveys light, surface shape, material or depth. A draftsperson can vary hatching and pencil pressure; a computer renderer can calculate point intensities from a model. The two share spatial value assignment, not one identical production method.[ref-fb31b3969a17][ref-d9a41d454aba]

Scope of Application

The National Gallery of Art teaches hatching, crosshatching and pressure as ways to build tone and define drawn forms. Phong's original computer-graphics paper shades curved polygonal objects by interpolating surface normals and evaluating a light/reflection function at image points; it compares this with Gouraud's vertex-intensity interpolation. The latter is a computational subtype, not a definition of every drawing technique.[ref-fb31b3969a17][ref-d9a41d454aba]

Clarity

Outline determines a boundary, whereas shading supplies value differences across the represented form. Hidden-surface removal decides what is visible and shading assigns appearance to it. Darkness need not follow a single light-facing angle: material, viewer and texture also affect the image.[^ref-d9a41d454aba]

Manages Complexity

Image values compress many cues into a surface a viewer can read. The same curve can be suggested by pencil marks or raster intensities, but a shaded image does not uniquely reveal its underlying geometry or lighting.

Abstract Reasoning

If a polygonal rendering has distorted highlights, inspect whether it interpolates vertex shades or normals; Phong's original comparison favored per-point normal-based calculation for highlight shape at extra cost. If a drawing appears flat, ask whether mark density differentiates its form instead of merely filling its contour.[ref-d9a41d454aba][ref-fb31b3969a17]

Knowledge Transfer

The form-to-spatial-values relation carries between drawing and computer graphics, while the algorithms and media do not. Phong's model-specific omission of some environmental effects does not justify saying that cast shadows are always outside shading. The live Representation prime is the prerequisite under composition/presupposes across both media, not a taxonomic genus of shading as a technique.[^ref-d9a41d454aba]

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Shading sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (76th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
