Simon Effect¶
Explain why responses are faster when a stimulus's task-irrelevant spatial location matches the response side: the perceptual system pre-attentively generates a same-side response code that facilitates selection when it agrees with the task-mandated code and costs ~30 ms when it conflicts.
Core Idea¶
The Simon effect is the reaction-time phenomenon in which responses to a non-spatial stimulus feature are faster when the stimulus's irrelevant spatial location corresponds to the response side and slower when it does not, even though location is task-irrelevant. The mechanism operates at response selection: a stimulus's location automatically generates a same-side response code that facilitates selection on corresponding trials and conflicts on non-corresponding ones. It cannot be abolished by instruction, motivation, or practice.

Clarity¶
Naming the effect drives a wedge between what the operator is instructed to use and what the perceptual-motor system unavoidably computes — a spatial response code tied to where the stimulus appeared. It makes legible that declaring a dimension irrelevant does not remove it from processing, and its persistence through instruction and practice tells the analyst the interference is pre-attentive and automatic, not a lapse of effort.
Manages Complexity¶
A large body of reaction-time interference results would each demand its own account. The Simon effect compresses its slice into one template: an irrelevant feature activates a response code, corresponding trials are facilitated, non-corresponding penalized. The analyst reads the sign of the cost off one congruency comparison. Localizing the mechanism to response selection fixes which dials matter — spatial arrangement moves the cost, instruction and motivation do not.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The effect licenses a stage-localization diagnostic reasoning from a cost's pattern back to where a conflict lives, and reads the persistence datum as evidence of pre-attentive automaticity. Its predictive move runs forward from one congruency comparison, its interventionist move is sharply constrained — only spatial rearrangement moves the cost — and its boundary-drawing move fixes reach to settings with an irrelevant spatial code and a spatially organized response set.
