Core Idea

A sister group is the complete alternative daughter branch at the immediate ancestral fork of a specified focal branch in a rooted phylogenetic hypothesis. In a resolved bifurcating tree, each of the two child subtrees is sister to the other. The relationship is conditional on the tree, its root, the included taxa and branch support. Mere proximity on a drawing or a more distant shared ancestor does not qualify.[ref-90ec3087a01c][ref-f186d06e9d63]

Scope of Application

The relation organizes comparisons of species, lineages or clades at different phylogenetic scales. Fior and colleagues recovered Aquilegia brevistyla and A. canadensis as sisters in their sampled plant phylogeny; that assignment is a result of the published hypothesis, not proof of a particular floral trait's cause. Living birds and crocodilians are closest living archosaur relatives in an extant-pruned comparison, but their complete named crown groups are not thereby immediate sisters in a fossil-inclusive historical tree.[ref-fc130de5513c][ref-2c7ee2fbf3e8]

Clarity

Identify the focal subtree, move to its immediately ancestral node, and select the entire other child subtree. Rotating branches around that node changes the diagram's appearance, not its sister relationships. Root ambiguity or an unresolved node may prevent a unique pair. A dated split begins two complete daughter stem lineages together, but separately named nested crown groups can have different ages; topology alone supplies no absolute date.[ref-90ec3087a01c][ref-f186d06e9d63]

Manages Complexity

A sister label condenses a large tree into a local, checkable claim about one fork. It can guide comparative analysis and can be extracted across many trees, provided the tree, taxon scope and support remain attached to the claim. Omitting extinct or unsampled branches may simplify the comparison yet change which subtree is immediately opposite the focal one in the declared tree.[ref-f186d06e9d63][ref-2c7ee2fbf3e8]

Abstract Reasoning

Test whether the proposed pair consists of the two complete, distinct, immediate child subtrees of one node in a declared rooted resolved tree. If one unit is merely a descendant inside the opposite branch, if the alleged fork is older, or if a polytomy has been forced into a binary pair, the claimed sister relation is not established. Even a sound sister assignment does not itself prove ancestral character states, causal trait effects or equal crown ages.[ref-90ec3087a01c][ref-952123ca28b8][^ref-fc130de5513c]

Knowledge Transfer

The immediate-opposite-branch test transfers from the sampled Aquilegia pair to the deep archosaur comparison, while their evidence and biological interpretations do not. Sisterhood is a domain-specific specialization of live Relation: two eligible subtrees stand in a binary association under a rooted topology. Clade describes a possible operand, not the relation's parent genus. A generic sibling-branch pattern outside phylogenetics remains a future-prime question rather than an asserted identity.

  • Sister Group is a kind of Relation Prime

For a declared rooted resolved tree, sisterhood is a specified binary association true exactly of the two complete immediate daughter subtrees of one node.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Sister Group sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (65th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
