Situated Cognition¶
Hold that knowing and skilled performance are constitutively of their situation — distributed across agent, tools, and setting — not a context-free program the situation merely modulates, forcing a constitutive-versus-causal test on any competence.
Core Idea¶
Situated cognition is the position that knowing, reasoning, and skilled performance are constitutively shaped by the physical, social, instrumental, and cultural situations in which they occur — not merely influenced by them. The claim is constitutive, not causal: cognition is not a portable symbolic program that context modulates, but a performance partly of the situation, distributed across agent, tools, co-participants, and setting. Lave's Weight Watchers and Hutchins's ship-navigation studies ground it.
Scope of Application¶
Situated cognition lives across the subfields of cognitive science and the learning sciences as a load-bearing theoretical stance; its reach is within that domain.

Clarity¶
The clarifying force turns on one distinction: constitutive versus causal. The old paradigm already granted context "affects" a program running the same underneath; the situated claim is that the performance is partly of the situation, so there is no context-free program to modulate. This sharpens "did the knowledge transfer?" into "do the training and target settings share their load-bearing situational features?"
Manages Complexity¶
The learning sciences accumulated anomalies the portable-symbol view could only patch one at a time — kitchen fractions failing on paper, navigation running across a crew. Situated cognition compresses them onto one constitutive commitment, so each anomaly becomes a straightforward consequence: the "same domain" in two settings is two practices. The analyst carries one stance plus a checklist of shared situational features.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The stance licenses diagnostic reasoning (reading a same-person performance gap as two distinct practices), interventionist design moves (authentic practice versus decontextualized drill, predicted by feature overlap), boundary-drawing on the constitutive-versus-causal line and its methodological stake, and prediction of transfer and the formal-versus-practical gap from situational-feature overlap.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within cognitive science the constitutive commitment and its situational-feature checklist travel across learning research, workplace studies, robotics, and HCI. Beyond it the stance does not travel as mechanism — exported wholesale it collapses into the slogan "context matters." The sharper phenomena it bundles travel through adjacent parents distributed_cognition, transfer_failure, expertise/tacit_knowledge, and context_sensitivity; carry those, not the stance.
