Situated Learning

Treat competence as something formed and recognised inside a community of practice rather than transferred through a curriculum, so a novice learns by doing real low-stakes work at the periphery and deepening toward the centre as the community recognises their growing skill.

Core Idea

Situated learning, developed by Lave and Wenger (1991), is the commitment that learning is not the transfer of decontextualised information but participation in the authentic activities, relationships, and standards of a community of practice. Its mechanism is legitimate peripheral participation: the novice enters at the periphery doing real, low-stakes work that genuinely contributes, observing full-membership activity, and deepening toward centrality on a trajectory paced by the community's recognition rather than a curriculum clock.

Clarity

Naming situated learning makes legible an asymmetry curriculum-centred accounts cannot see: competence is recognised by a community of practice, not measured by a test standing outside it. Once the criterion is community recognition, the periphery becomes the site where competence is actually formed, dissolving the puzzle of why durable occupational skill accrues on the job. It also separates the site of learning from its content, so a context mismatch is not treated as a syllabus problem.

Manages Complexity

Training design spans an unruly variety of cases, each with its own content and apparent peculiarities. Situated learning compresses that heterogeneity to one locus — the community of practice — and a small parameter set the analyst scores directly: is the activity authentic, the contribution legitimate, the community framing, the trajectory present, and how large is the context-distance. Recurring puzzles resolve to that distance rather than being re-diagnosed as defects in the learner's grasp.

Within the human-learner / community-of-practice substrate the frame transfers as mechanism, wide across apprenticeship crafts, professional schools, vocational systems, and higher-ed reforms, because each shares the load-bearing stack of learners, recognising communities, and real-stakes work — the resident, the clerk, and the Liberian tailor are the same diagram on different practices. Beyond that stack only the bare durable update travels, and it belongs to the parent prime learning; machine-learning "situated" variants borrow the word while the engine is statistical, so that reach is analogy, not the named concept.
