Situational-Awareness Collapse¶
Locate a control failure under tempo in the picture-keeping pipeline rather than in missing data — a rate problem where perception, comprehension, or projection can no longer cycle fast enough to keep the decision-maker's model current.
Core Idea¶
Situational-awareness collapse is the operational-control failure in which the team directing a dynamic operation loses, across a decision-relevant window, a current and coherent picture of where the system actually is. Endsley's three-level model frames the failing pipeline — perception, comprehension, projection — and under incident tempo the environment's rate of change outpaces its bandwidth. The signature is not missing data: the information existed; its integration into a shared, current model failed.
Scope of Application¶
Situational-awareness collapse lives wherever a control loop runs under tempo — a dynamic environment, a picture-keeping pipeline, and a decision process with a staleness tolerance.

Clarity¶
Naming the collapse moves the post-incident question off "did the team have the information?" — reviews almost always find that it did — to "did they have a current, coherent picture of it?", pointing the diagnosis at fusion and update cadence. Its second act decomposes "we lost SA" into perception, comprehension, and projection, so a reviewer keys the remedy to the stage that failed.
Manages Complexity¶
A tempo-driven failure presents as a tangle of particulars, each inviting its own narrow fix. The concept compresses it along two axes: which of the three stages broke (fixing the remedy class), and a rate comparison between pipeline bandwidth and environmental change. It also pre-empts the field's standing red herring — that data was missing — since the data almost always existed somewhere.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept licenses diagnostic reasoning (localizing the break to one of three stages, with the perception-versus-comprehension cut load-bearing), interventionist reasoning (keying the remedy to the stage and licensing tempo control), boundary-drawing that requires real-time tempo and integration-boundedness, and predictive reasoning stated as a rate inequality with a silently widening gap.
