Smiling curve¶
A value-chain model in which upstream conception and downstream branding or services capture more value added than middle-stage standardized manufacturing.
Core Idea¶
The smiling curve plots value added against sequential activities such as research, design, components, manufacturing, distribution, branding, marketing, and service, producing a U-shaped profile in the industries and periods where the thesis holds. Capabilities, scarcity, intellectual property, scale, bargaining power, competition, and customer control distribute margins unevenly across stages; firms use the curve to reason about positioning and upgrading. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
