Snake Projection¶
A route-tailored map projection that keeps grid-distance distortion low along a long engineering corridor.
Core Idea¶
A Snake Projection maps geographic locations on a long engineering route into a continuous planar grid tailored to that corridor. Its parameters aim to keep ground distance and grid distance close along a bending rail line or comparable project, accounting for relevant scale and height effects. The low-distortion strip follows the route; accuracy need not remain equally good far from it. Thus Snake Projection is not one fixed worldwide set of coefficients or any map that happens to show a winding line.
Iliffe, Arthur and Preston reported Network Rail contractors using tailored grids on the East and West Coast main lines. Their 2007 study described along-track scale factors within about ±20 parts per million of unity over several hundred kilometres. That is a bounded, attested application, not a warranty for every route or remote area. A broad national grid maps the same region but is not designed around this project-specific ground/grid length target. The general target-to-coordinate mapping instantiates Representation; route-following scale fidelity is the distinctive engineering constraint.
Scope of Application¶
These uses declare a route, grid, and corridor-specific scale objective.
- Rail surveying. Use a continuous engineering grid along a long route with declared scale bounds.
- Linear infrastructure. Consider similarly elongated corridors, such as a pipeline, only after separate parameter design.
- CAD/GIS coordination. Share route-based coordinates while preserving the declared geographic transformation.
- Distance interpretation. State whether a grid length approximates ground length within the actual design corridor.
Clarity¶
Identify the Earth-referenced alignment, the planar grid, the tailored transformation, and the measured corridor where ground/grid lengths agree closely. A national grid used unchanged is the closest miss. A wavy line without geodetic coordinates is merely an illustration. Do not transfer one railway's ±20-ppm result to an untested route or outside the design corridor.
Manages Complexity¶
A very long engineering project crosses multiple local mapping regimes. A tailored continuous grid compresses those local coordinate concerns into one working frame, so repeated ground/grid corrections can be reduced along the route. This simplification is conditional: project parameterization and height effects matter, and low distortion away from the route may be sacrificed. The projection manages one geometry by exposing, not abolishing, the spatial fidelity boundary.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Declare the geographic route, elevation frame, and engineering corridor of interest.
- Select the continuous planar coordinate grid and route-tailored mapping parameters.
- Evaluate ground/grid scale along the whole route rather than at a single point.
- Record the tested low-distortion region and off-corridor degradation.
- Use measured project performance only for the routes and parameters that support it.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The corridor-tailoring principle transfers from one rail route to another or to a comparable elongated project only after its own alignment, height frame, and parameters are recalculated. A reported ±20-ppm rail result cannot be copied as a guarantee to a pipeline. The broader target-to-medium relation is a strict Representation instance; calling every cartographic map a Snake Projection would erase the long-route scale objective.
