Social Bonding¶
Explain why affectively capable individuals keep routing help and protection toward one another long after any incentive would predict it: repeated shared experience and emotional co-regulation forge a durable bond that generates behaviour above and orthogonal to current incentives.
Core Idea¶
Social bonding is the process by which repeated interaction, shared experience, and emotional co-regulation between two or more affectively capable individuals produce a durable relationship that subsequently biases each party's attention, cooperation, resource allocation, and protective behaviour toward the other — persistently and across contexts that neither the initial interaction nor any current incentive structure would predict or require.
The structural distinction the concept draws is between two kinds of coordination: transactional, in which parties cooperate when and because the incentive structure supports it and reoptimise calmly when it changes, and bonded, in which the relational tie itself becomes a behaviour-generating object that operates above and orthogonal to current incentives. A bonded party routes preferential help and attention to the bonded other through organisational reshuffles, geographic separations, and changes in shared interest that would dissolve a purely transactional relationship; loss of the bond produces grief and costly repair attempts, not calm reoptimisation. In mammals the bonded state has neurochemical correlates — oxytocin and opioid systems are implicated in bond formation and maintenance — that operate as a substrate constraint: bonding in the social-psychological sense requires affectively capable parties with the neurobiological machinery to form, represent, and be motivated by persistent relational ties. Bond formation is reliably accelerated by shared high-stakes experience, synchronous activity, and emotional co-regulation under stress; once formed, the bond persists across separation and decays more slowly than the conditions that produced it.

What It Is Not¶
- Not transactional cooperation that merely happens to persist. Two parties who keep cooperating because the payoff structure still favours it are transactional, not bonded — they reoptimise calmly when incentives shift and separate without cost. A bond is identified by the opposite signature: preferential routing that survives incentive change and severance that produces grief and costly repair, not a clean exit.
- Not mere familiarity or proximity. Frequent contact without affective load is acquaintance; the bond is a behaviour-generating object carrying an affective and (in mammals) neurochemical state. People who interact constantly can remain unbonded, and a bond once formed persists across long separation — so the diagnostic is the cost of separation, not the rate of contact.
- Not a guarantee of welfare or healthy attachment. Bonding is not inherently benign: durable ties form between mistrustful or even harmful parties (trauma bonds, captor–captive ties), where the same persistence-through-incentive-change and grief-at-severance signature appears. The concept names the structure of the tie, not a verdict that the relationship is good for either party.
- Not the chemical homonym. "Bonding" in chemistry — covalent, ionic, hydrogen — shares only the word: there is no grief at separation, no behavioural bias across context, no affective state, no formation-versus-maintenance regime. It is a name collision, not a cross-domain instance of the same mechanism.
- Not a substrate-free "persistent network edge." Strip the affective capacity and what remains is repeated interaction producing a weighted, persistent edge — already covered by network notions of persistent edges and preferential attachment, where a tie biases future routing without anyone grieving its loss. Social bonding is that durable-edge skeleton plus the affective and neurochemical signature; the distinctive cargo is exactly what non-sentient networks lack.
Scope of Application¶
Social bonding lives across the relational subfields of psychology, ethology, and the adjacent social sciences wherever affectively capable parties — paradigmatically humans, broadly mammals — form persistent ties; its reach is bounded to that affective substrate (the bare persistent-edge skeleton that survives in non-sentient networks belongs to its preferential-attachment / persistent-edge parents, and the chemical homonym shares only the word).
- Developmental psychology — attachment theory describes parent–infant bonding, with its secure / insecure / disorganised typologies and long-run consequences for affect regulation.
- Behavioural ecology and ethology — pair-bonding in voles, primates, and birds and mother–offspring bonds in mammals, with their oxytocin/opioid and brain-anatomy signatures.
- Social psychology — friendship formation, peer-group cohesion, and mentor–protégé ties, including the bonding-versus-bridging distinction in social capital.
- Organisational behaviour — the team-formation phases (forming, storming, norming, performing) where "norming" is bond consolidation, plus affinity-group and mentor–protégé formation; the launch-crunch dyad and surgical-team cohesion are characteristic cases.
- Anthropology and ritual studies — the ritual mechanisms that induce bonding (initiation ordeals, shared adversity, synchronous movement, communal eating), and the structural identity between bonding-by-ritual and bonding-by-shared-stakes.
Clarity¶
Naming social bonding makes legible a behaviour that an incentive-and-cooperation account treats as an anomaly: a party keeps routing preferential help, attention, and protection to another long after the shared task, the organisational alignment, or the interest overlap that once justified it has dissolved. Without the concept, this looks like irrationality or residual habit; with it, the persistence is the expected signature of a bonded tie rather than a transactional one. The sharp diagnostic the label supplies is the response to a change in incentives. Transactional partners reoptimise calmly when the payoff structure shifts and separate without cost; bonded partners do not — incentive shifts leave the preferential routing intact, and severance produces grief and costly repair attempts rather than a clean exit. That asymmetry in the cost of dissolution is what tells an observer which kind of tie they are looking at, and lets them stop predicting a bonded dyad's behaviour from its current incentive overlap, which will mislead.
The concept also separates two things that relational vocabulary blurs. First, it distinguishes the bond from its neighbours — alliance (strategic, incentive-contingent), acquaintance (no affective load), agreement (no durability across context) — by asking a small set of questions about interaction frequency, intensity of shared experience, emotional co-regulation, and the cost of separation. Second, it splits formation from maintenance: a bond is built fastest under shared high-stakes or synchronous experience, but once formed it persists across separation and decays more slowly than the conditions that produced it, requiring only intermittent contact to hold. Holding formation and maintenance apart lets a practitioner ask the right question of a given relationship — whether to act on how a bond forms or on how an existing one is kept from decaying — rather than treating the tie as a single undifferentiated quantity.
Manages Complexity¶
Relational life presents an analyst with a sprawl of seemingly distinct phenomena — parent–infant attachment, mating pair-bonds, peer-group cohesion, mentor–protégé ties, the cohesion of military units and surgical teams, even trauma bonds — and a parallel sprawl of behaviours that an incentive-and-cooperation account can only file as anomalies: preferential help that outlasts the shared task, grief and costly repair at a severance that should have been a clean exit, defence and resource-routing that no current payoff structure predicts. Social bonding compresses both by collapsing the typology to one behaviour-generating object, the bond, whose presence and depth an observer reads off a small fixed parameter set — interaction frequency, intensity of shared experience, emotional co-regulation, and, above all, the cost of separation — rather than re-deriving each relationship type from scratch. The decisive compression is a single binary read from one diagnostic: the response to a change in incentives. Transactional ties reoptimise calmly when the payoff shifts and dissolve without cost; bonded ties leave the preferential routing intact through the shift and exact grief and repair at severance. That one test sorts a relationship into bonded versus transactional and, with it, settles which of the neighbouring categories — alliance (incentive-contingent), acquaintance (no affective load), agreement (no durability across context) — actually applies, so the observer can stop predicting a bonded dyad's behaviour from its current incentive overlap, which will mislead. A second axis keeps the read tractable across time by splitting formation from maintenance: formation is governed by shared high-stakes, synchronous activity, and co-regulation under stress; maintenance is governed by the bond's slow decay across separation, needing only intermittent contact to hold. Tracking which regime a given relationship is in tells the practitioner whether to act on how a bond forms or on how an existing one is kept from decaying, instead of treating the tie as one undifferentiated quantity. The high-dimensional question "what is this relationship and how will it behave" thus reduces to a few interaction-and-affect parameters, a binary sorted by separation-cost, and a formation-versus-maintenance branch — the qualitative trajectory reading off directly once those are fixed.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Social bonding licenses a set of inferential moves in social psychology and ethology, all turning on treating the bond as a behaviour-generating object that operates above and orthogonal to current incentives.
The signature diagnostic move sorts a relationship into bonded versus transactional by its response to a change in incentives, and the decisive cue is the cost of dissolution. When the payoff structure shifts, a transactional tie reoptimises calmly and separates without cost; a bonded tie leaves the preferential routing of attention, help, and resources intact through the shift, and severance produces grief and costly repair attempts rather than a clean exit. So the analyst infers a bond not from warmth or proximity but from persistence through incentive change plus grief at severance — a behaviour an incentive-and-cooperation account can only file as anomaly. The same one diagnostic, run over a small parameter set (interaction frequency, intensity of shared experience, emotional co-regulation, separation cost), settles which neighbouring category actually applies: alliance is incentive-contingent, acquaintance carries no affective load, agreement lacks durability across context — and a tie that routes help across organisational reshuffles and geographic separation is read as bonded.
The predictive move uses bond presence and depth to forecast behaviour that current incentives would not. A bonded dyad is predicted to cooperate under low-incentive conditions where a transactional pair would not, to defend and resource-route toward the bonded other through changes no payoff structure predicts, and to grieve and reorganise costly at loss in proportion to bond depth. The crucial negative prediction is that predicting a bonded dyad's behaviour from its current incentive overlap will mislead — the tie is forecast to govern routing long after the shared task, alignment, or interest overlap that produced it has dissolved. Formation is predicted to accelerate under shared high-stakes experience, synchronous activity, and emotional co-regulation under stress; and once formed, the bond is predicted to decay more slowly than the conditions that produced it, persisting across separation with only intermittent contact.
The interventionist move splits formation from maintenance and acts on the regime in play. To build a bond fast, the practitioner arranges the formation conditions — shared ordeal, synchronous movement, joint stake, co-regulation under stress — each a prediction that the manipulation will produce durable preferential routing that outlasts it. To hold an existing bond against decay, the lever is intermittent contact rather than continuous interaction, because maintenance rides the bond's slow decay. Keeping the two regimes apart is what tells the practitioner whether to act on how a bond forms or on how one is kept alive, rather than treating the tie as a single undifferentiated quantity; misreading maintenance as formation (or the reverse) aims the intervention at the wrong stage.
The boundary-drawing move keeps these inferences inside affectively capable parties — paradigmatically humans, broadly mammals — with the neurobiological machinery (oxytocin and opioid systems implicated) to form, represent, and be motivated by persistent relational ties. The substrate is a hard constraint: remove the affective capacity and "social bonding" reduces to repeated interaction with persistent preferential routing, already covered by network notions of persistent edges and preferential attachment, without the separation grief, the behavioural bias across context, or the affective signature that give the concept its predictive force. The boundary also blocks the homonym: chemistry's "bonding" shares the word but not the structure — there is no grief at separation, no cross-context behavioural bias, no affective state — so the inferences here do not transfer to it. Within the mammalian-and-human range the same separation-cost diagnostic and formation/maintenance branch govern attachment, pair-bonds, peer cohesion, mentor ties, and unit cohesion alike.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within the mammalian-and-human range the concept transfers as mechanism — the same machinery, scored the same way, across what otherwise look like unrelated relational phenomena. Developmental psychology's attachment theory (parent–infant bonds, with their secure/insecure typologies), behavioural-ecology and ethology's pair-bonds in voles, primates, and birds and their oxytocin/opioid signatures, social psychology's friendship and mentor–protégé ties, organisational behaviour's team-cohesion ("norming") phase, and anthropology's bonding-by-ritual (initiation ordeals, synchronous movement, communal eating) are not analogies of one another: they are one behaviour-generating object read off the same parameters (interaction frequency, shared-experience intensity, emotional co-regulation, separation cost), sorted by the same separation-cost diagnostic, and acted on through the same formation-versus-maintenance branch. The intervention vocabulary — shared ordeal, synchronous activity, joint stake, intermittent contact — ports intact across the cluster because all of these substrates satisfy the hard precondition: affectively capable parties with the neurobiological machinery to form, represent, and be motivated by persistent relational ties. The colleagues bonded by a launch crunch, the surgical team, the parent and infant, and the vole pair are the same diagram with substrate substitution, which is exactly why preferential routing that outlasts the shared task, grief at severance, and cooperation under low incentive recur across all of them.
Beyond affectively capable substrates the honest report is shared abstract mechanism (B) shading into pure homonymy, not analogy that preserves the concept. Strip the affective capacity and "social bonding" reduces to repeated interaction producing a persistent preferential edge — and that thinner pattern genuinely does recur in substrates with no feelings: it is already covered by network notions of persistent edges and preferential attachment, where a tie, once weighted, biases future routing without anyone grieving its loss. The cross-substrate lesson — that history can durably bias future interaction independent of present incentives — should therefore be carried by those graph/network primes (and, where a future relational-mass prime is admitted, by it), not by "social bonding," whose distinctive cargo (separation grief, cross-context behavioural bias, the affective and neurochemical signature) is precisely what the non-affective substrates lack. Push the word onto institutions, machines, or ecological networks of non-sentient species and only that strippable network skeleton survives; the bond as such does not travel.
A separate caution: chemistry's "bonding" (covalent, ionic, hydrogen) shares the word but not the structure, and is not even a usable analogy here — there is no grief at separation, no behavioural bias across context, no affective state, no formation-versus-maintenance regime. It is a name collision to be flagged, not a cross-domain instance of the same mechanism. The clean boundary, then: social bonding transfers literally wherever affectively capable parties form persistent relational ties, the underlying durable-edge structure transfers to non-affective networks under the names of its network parents, and the chemical homonym transfers nothing at all. Examples¶
Canonical¶
Harry Harlow's rhesus-monkey experiments (published from 1958) are the defining demonstration that a bond operates orthogonally to the feeding incentive. Infant macaques were raised with two surrogate "mothers": one a bare wire frame fitted with a milk bottle, the other a soft terrycloth form providing no food. Behavioral-learning theory predicted the infants would attach to whichever surrogate supplied nourishment. Instead the infants spent the overwhelming majority of their time clinging to the cloth mother, visiting the wire mother only briefly to feed and returning immediately to the cloth form. When frightened, they fled to the cloth surrogate for comfort and used it as a secure base to explore. The affective tie — driven by contact comfort — formed and governed behavior independent of, and against, the reward structure.
Mapped back: The infant macaques are the affectively capable parties; clinging and contact comfort are the shared experience from which the tie accumulates. That the infants preferred the foodless cloth mother is the pure case of the bond as behaviour-generating object operating "above and orthogonal to current incentives," and fleeing to it when frightened is the behavioural bias — protective routing no payoff structure predicts.
Applied / In Practice¶
The study of combat motivation is a well-documented field deployment. Shils and Janowitz's 1948 analysis of Wehrmacht cohesion, and subsequent research on Allied and later forces, found that soldiers in sustained combat fight and endure primarily for the members of their immediate primary group — their squad — rather than for ideology, nation, or strategic incentive. The intense shared danger of combat rapidly forges bonds that then generate mutual protection, risk-taking, and refusal to abandon comrades far beyond what any rational incentive would dictate, and the loss of a bonded unit member produces acute grief. Militaries deliberately exploit the formation conditions — shared ordeal, synchronous drill, joint stakes — to build unit cohesion, and rotate personnel as intact units to preserve it.
Mapped back: The squad members are the affectively capable parties; sustained combat danger is the shared experience under stress that accelerates formation. Fighting for comrades over cause is the behavioural bias generated by the bond as behaviour-generating object; grief at a comrade's death is the separation grief marking the tie as bonded. Deliberate ordeal-based training versus unit-rotation policy is the formation-vs-maintenance split in practice.
Structural Tensions¶
T1: Bonded versus transactional (persistence through incentive change, the whole diagnostic). The concept's core is that a bonded tie routes help, attention, and protection above and orthogonal to current incentives, while a transactional one reoptimises calmly when the payoff shifts and separates without cost. The single decisive cue is the cost of dissolution — grief and costly repair versus a clean exit. But this locates the diagnostic at severance or incentive change, not in the steady state: warmth, proximity, and frequent cooperation are all compatible with a purely transactional tie, so a bond cannot be read off ordinary interaction and is confirmed only when the incentives that would sustain a transactional relationship are removed. The tie is most legible exactly when it is under threat. Diagnostic: When incentives shift, does the preferential routing persist and severance produce grief (bonded), or does the party reoptimise and exit cleanly (transactional)?
T2: Formation versus maintenance (two regimes, opposite levers). Bonds build fastest under shared high-stakes experience, synchronous activity, and emotional co-regulation under stress; once formed, they decay slowly across separation and need only intermittent contact to hold. The levers are therefore opposite — intense shared ordeal to form, sparse contact to maintain — so misreading which regime a relationship is in aims the intervention at the wrong stage. Continuous high-intensity contact lavished on an already-formed bond is wasted, and intermittent contact expected to build one from scratch fails to reach the formation threshold. Treating the tie as a single undifferentiated quantity guarantees one of these errors. Diagnostic: Is the tie in formation (needing shared ordeal and synchrony) or in maintenance (needing only intermittent contact to resist slow decay)?
T3: Bond structure versus welfare verdict (durable is not benign). The same persistence-through-incentive-change and grief-at-severance signature that marks healthy attachment appears in trauma bonds and captor–captive ties. The concept names the structure of the tie — its durability and behaviour-generating force — not a verdict on whether it serves either party, so reading "bonded" as "good relationship" smuggles in a welfare judgment the mechanism does not carry. Yet the reverse error is equally available: dismissing a harmful tie as irrational misses that the very same bonding structure is exactly why it persists and resists incentive-based exit. Diagnostic: Is "bonded" being read as a structural fact about persistence and behavioural bias, or is a verdict that the relationship is good for the parties being quietly imported?
T4: Bond above incentives versus incentive-engineered formation (militaries manufacture it). The bond generates behaviour orthogonal to current incentives — soldiers fight for the squad, not the payoff — which is the concept's defining claim. Yet the bond's formation conditions are deliberately arrangeable: militaries engineer shared ordeal, synchronous drill, and joint stakes to build unit cohesion, then rotate personnel as intact units to preserve it. So a tie that later defies incentives is itself a producible output of incentive-structured design, which sits uneasily beside the claim that the bond operates independently of incentives. The orthogonality is real at the behaviour stage but not at the formation stage. Diagnostic: Is the bond being treated as a given, or as an engineered outcome of deliberately arranged formation conditions that an incentive-designer set up?
T5: Affective substrate versus persistent-edge skeleton (what gives it predictive force). Social bonding requires affectively capable parties with the neurobiological machinery — oxytocin and opioid systems — to grieve loss and bias behaviour across context. Strip that substrate and only a persistent, preferentially-weighted network edge remains: real and durable, but carrying no separation grief, no cross-context behavioural bias, no affective signature. The distinctive predictive cargo (grief scaled to bond depth, cooperation under low incentive, protective routing) is precisely what the bare edge lacks, so extending "bonding" to institutions or non-sentient networks keeps the skeleton and loses the mechanism. The affective substrate is not decoration; it is the source of every prediction that distinguishes a bond from a weighted edge. T6: Autonomy versus reduction (a named social-psychological mechanism or its network-parent skeleton). Social bonding transfers as full mechanism across the mammalian-and-human range — attachment, pair-bonds, unit cohesion, mentor ties — read off the same parameters (interaction frequency, shared-experience intensity, co-regulation, separation cost) and sorted by the same separation-cost diagnostic. But beyond affectively capable substrates only the parent skeleton travels: persistent_edges and preferential_attachment (with a candidate relational-mass prime), the bare fact that interaction history durably biases future routing independent of present incentives — without grief, affect, or neurochemistry. The chemical homonym ("bonding" in covalent/ionic sense) shares only the word and transfers nothing at all. Diagnostic: Resolve toward the network parents when carrying the durable-edge lesson to non-sentient systems; toward social bonding when affectively capable parties form persistent relational ties.
Structural–Framed Character¶
Social bonding sits toward the structural end but stops short of the pole — best read as mixed-structural, closely parallel to how isostasy is characterized: a genuine, evaluatively neutral biological-relational mechanism wearing psychology-and-ethology vocabulary. Four criteria read structural. Its evaluative_weight is nil, and the entry is emphatic about it: the concept names the structure of the tie — its durability and behaviour-generating force — not a verdict that the relationship serves either party, since the same persistence-through-incentive-change and grief-at-severance signature marks trauma bonds and captor–captive ties as readily as healthy attachment. Its institutional_origin is none: bonding is a natural process with neurochemical correlates (oxytocin, opioid systems), named by science, not an artifact of any survey or agency. And it is not human_practice_bound in the constitutive-institutional sense: voles pair-bond, macaques cling to a cloth mother, and mother–offspring ties form whether or not a psychologist observes them — the mechanism runs in mammalian nature, needing affectively capable parties (its natural substrate) but no institution. Within that mammalian-and-human range, cross-field reuse is recognition, not import: attachment, pair-bonds, unit cohesion, and mentor ties are one behaviour-generating object recognized intact across substrates, the same diagram with substrate substitution.
What keeps it off the structural pole is vocab_travels, which it fails. The operative vocabulary — separation grief, emotional co-regulation, the affective and neurochemical signature, the formation-versus-maintenance regime — is irreducibly tied to affectively capable organisms, and none of it floats free of feeling substrates the way "persistent weighted edge" does in a pure prime. Within the mammalian range those terms carry full content; beyond it, pushed onto institutions, machines, or non-sentient ecological networks, only the bare persistent-edge skeleton survives while the grief, the cross-context bias, and the neurochemistry drop away, and the chemical homonym ("bonding" in the covalent sense) shares only the word and transfers nothing. The portable structural skeleton is repeated interaction producing a persistent, preferentially-weighted edge that biases future routing independent of present incentives — and that skeleton is what social bonding instantiates from its umbrella primes, persistent_edges and preferential_attachment (with a candidate relational-mass prime). The cross-substrate reach belongs to those network parents — the durable-edge structure travels to non-affective networks under their names — while the affective and neurochemical cargo that makes "social bonding" the specific named mechanism stays pinned to sentient parties. Its character: structural in skeleton — a real, evaluatively neutral, recognized-in-nature relational mechanism running across mammals — but stated in affective-and-neurochemical vocabulary that pins it to feeling substrates, leaving it mixed-structural, the sentient-substrate instance of the persistent-edge / preferential-attachment pattern rather than a free-floating prime.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
This section decides why social bonding is a domain-specific abstraction and not a prime, and it carries the case for its domain-specificity — there is no separate section for it.
What is skeletal (could lift toward a cross-domain prime). Strip the affective and neurochemical layer and a thin relational structure survives: repeated interaction producing a persistent, preferentially-weighted edge that biases future routing independent of present incentives. The pieces that travel are abstract — a history of interaction that accumulates into a durable tie, a tie that persists after the conditions that formed it have gone, and a resulting bias in how attention and resources are routed that is orthogonal to current payoffs. That skeleton is genuinely substrate-portable — it recurs in non-sentient networks with no feelings at all — which is exactly why the entry names the parents it instantiates: persistent_edges and preferential_attachment (with a candidate relational-mass prime), where a tie, once weighted, biases future routing without anyone grieving its loss. It is the core social bonding shares with weighted-network structure, not what makes it social bonding.
What is domain-bound. Almost everything that makes the concept social bonding in particular is psychology-and-ethology furniture and none of it survives extraction intact: the requirement of affectively capable parties with the neurobiological machinery (oxytocin and opioid systems) to form, represent, and be motivated by relational ties; the separation grief scaled to bond depth; the costly-repair, no-clean-exit signature that marks a tie as bonded rather than transactional; the formation-versus-maintenance split with its opposite levers (shared ordeal to build, intermittent contact to hold); and the worked cases — Harlow's cloth mother, combat-unit cohesion, pair-bonding voles, parent–infant attachment. These are the substance the fields actually study. Why this does not clear the prime bar. A prime is a relational structure whose vocabulary travels and whose cross-domain transfer is recognition of the same mechanism, not analogy. Social bonding's transfer is bimodal. Within the mammalian-and-human range the mechanism travels intact — attachment, pair-bonds, unit cohesion, mentor ties, and bonding-by-ritual are one behaviour-generating object, read off the same parameters (interaction frequency, shared-experience intensity, co-regulation, separation cost), sorted by the same separation-cost diagnostic, and acted on through the same formation-versus-maintenance branch — because every one of these substrates supplies affectively capable parties. Beyond affectively capable substrates it does not travel as mechanism at all: only the bare persistent-edge skeleton survives, and the chemical homonym is a pure name collision. And when the bare structural lesson is needed cross-domain — that interaction history can durably bias future routing independent of present incentives — it is already carried, in more general form, by the network parents the concept instantiates: persistent_edges and preferential_attachment. The cross-domain reach belongs to those parents; "social bonding," as named, carries affective-and-neurochemical baggage — separation grief, cross-context bias, the neurochemistry — that stays pinned to sentient parties.

Attachment is the safe-haven and secure-base species of Social Bonding, specialized to a vulnerable party, selected protective figure, and history-tuned working model.Attachment is a strict specialization of Social Bonding. The broader domain mechanism forms a durable affective tie whose accumulated history continues to bias help, protection, and behavior after the immediate conditions that formed it have changed. Attachment retains that bond and adds the caregiving-system differentia: a vulnerable individual regulates proximity to a selected figure, uses that figure as a safe haven under threat and a secure base for exploration, and carries learned expectations forward as an internal working model. - Transactional cooperation / alliance. Parties who cooperate because the incentive structure favours it and reoptimise calmly when it shifts — a strategic, incentive-contingent tie. A bond routes help above and orthogonal to current incentives and exacts grief at severance. Tell: when the payoff structure changes, does the party reoptimise and exit cleanly (transactional/alliance) or keep routing preferential help and grieve at loss (bonded)? The cost of dissolution is the discriminator; warmth and frequent cooperation alone do not distinguish them.
- Attachment (developmental theory). The specific parent–infant bond studied in developmental psychology, with secure/insecure/disorganised typologies. It is a subtype of social bonding — the same behaviour-generating tie in the caregiving dyad — not a rival concept. Tell: is the tie specifically the caregiver-infant relationship with its security typologies (attachment) or bonding in general across pairs, peers, and units (social bonding)? Social bonding generates help orthogonal to current incentives via an affective tie, and appears even where no genetic or reciprocity payoff exists (the launch-crunch dyad, cross-species bonds). Tell: is the helping explained by shared genes or expected reciprocation (kin selection/reciprocal altruism) or by a durable affective bond that persists when no such payoff is present (social bonding)? Tell: is there an affectively capable party that would grieve the bond's loss (social bonding) or an atomic interaction with none of that machinery (chemical bonding)? A pure name collision, not a cross-domain instance.
