Social Communication¶
Treat the relational-pragmatic layer of language — turn-taking, relevance, politeness, repair, register, common ground — as a layer distinct from grammatical correctness that can fail on its own, so a child with clean syntax may still be unable to hold a conversation.
Core Idea¶
Social communication names the relational-pragmatic layer of language use — the norm-governed rules for how participants take turns, stay relevant, manage face, repair breakdowns, adjust register, and sustain relationships — held distinct from the phonological, syntactic, and lexical correctness of utterances. The structural commitment is a two-layer model: a propositional layer (what was said) and a relational-pragmatic layer (how it was said), which can fail independently. Isolated impairment of the relational layer is social communication disorder (SCD), a DSM-5 diagnosis distinct from autism.
Scope of Application¶
The construct lives across the clinical-pragmatics subfields of speech-language pathology and adjacent communication-disorder fields; its reach is within that domain.

Clarity¶
Naming social communication as a layer makes visible a child who would be missed: one whose phonology, syntax, and vocabulary test clean yet who cannot hold a conversation. By separating "can the utterance be formed correctly?" from "can it be deployed appropriately?" it gives relational failures their own layer, assessment, and intervention. It also sharpens the pragmatic-violation-versus-grammatical-error, difference-versus-deficit, and SCD-versus-ASD distinctions clinical practice cannot blur.
Manages Complexity¶
Indefinitely many conversational misfires collapse in two strokes: first onto a single layer distinct from utterance correctness, so the clinician's first move is one binary — propositional or relational? — and second into a small set of named, theory-grounded subsystems (turn-taking, maxims, politeness/face, repair, register, common ground) an assessor tracks one at a time, plus two branch conditions (difference-versus-deficit, SCD-versus-ASD).
Abstract Reasoning¶
The construct licenses a diagnostic move resolving a failure onto the two-layer model against the grain of correctness-based assessment, a within-layer localization to a named subsystem, an interventionist move with a do-not-treat-the-grammar clause, and two boundary moves — difference-versus-deficit and SCD-versus-ASD — posable only because the relational layer is treated as norm-governed.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within speech-language pathology the construct transfers as full mechanism — the two-layer model, the named subsystems, the two boundary moves, and the treat-the-relational-layer prescription carry across paediatric, autism, aphasiology, and AAC work with only population and etiology changing. Beyond the clinic it is a bundle of mechanisms: its components (social_norms, common_ground, face_management, speech_act_theory, code_switching, turn-taking, repair) recur across workplace, moderation, and dialogue-system settings, but that is the components travelling, not the clinical construct, whose diagnostic machinery stays home.
