Social mobility¶
Movement of individuals, families or groups between positions in a society’s stratification system across a lifetime or generations.
Core Idea¶
Mobility can be absolute or relative, upward or downward and intra- or intergenerational, and conclusions depend on the status measure and population transition matrix. Education, occupation, wealth, institutions and discrimination affect transitions between origin and destination strata, while structural change alters the number of positions available independently of relative opportunity. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
