Source Credibility¶
A receiver-side, perception-mediated weighting attached to a communicator — decomposing into expertise, trustworthiness, and goodwill — that gates how much of a message's content is accepted and acted upon, independent of the content's own evidential quality.
Core Idea¶
Source credibility is the receiver-side, multidimensional weighting attached to a communicator that mediates how much of a message's content is accepted, retained, and acted upon — independent of the content's evidential quality. Originating in Hovland and Weiss (1951), it is organized around expertise (perceived competence), trustworthiness (perceived honesty), and goodwill (perceived concern for the receiver). The weighting is receiver-side: the source's real qualities count only through perception, which is why credibility can diverge from reliability.
Scope of Application¶
Source credibility, as the persuasion-research construct, lives across the subfields of communication and media studies that study message reception and uptake.
- Persuasion research — the canonical home: Hovland-Weiss, McCroskey, the ELM peripheral route.
- Mass communication and journalism — source vetting, attribution conventions, corrections.
- Science communication — scientist credibility mediating uptake on vaccines, climate, nutrition.
- Health communication — the trusted-community-messenger strategy.
- Organizational communication — the same message landing differently from CEO versus manager.
- Political communication — messenger-keyed campaign strategy.
Clarity¶
Naming source credibility fixes its receiver-side character — a weighting the audience assigns, not a property the source possesses. Its sharpest service is the credibility-versus-reliability divergence: a credible-but-wrong expert and a reliable-but-unknown newcomer become distinct cases needing opposite responses. Decomposing the weighting into expertise, trustworthiness, and goodwill turns "be more credible" into a diagnosable question with a dimension-specific repair.
Manages Complexity¶
The construct compresses the enormous persuasion design space by asserting uptake is the joint product of content and one receiver-side weighting, localizing failures there. Resolving that weighting into three dimensions yields a branch structure with dimension-specific repairs, extended by two mechanisms without enlarging the parameter set: borrowed credibility (transfer from a high source) and the sleeper effect (a decay term).
Abstract Reasoning¶
The construct licenses a diagnostic move (infer the deficient dimension, separate credibility from reliability), an interventionist move (apply the dimension-specific repair, borrow weighting, or reinforce against decay, forecasting where effort is wasted), boundary-drawing (fix the weighting as receiver-side and per-message, distinct from reliability, legitimacy, reputation, trust), and predictive reasoning about the sleeper-effect trajectory and asymmetric repair dynamics.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within communication and media studies source credibility transfers as mechanism, intact, across journalism, science, health, organizational, and political communication — the receiver-side weighting, three dimensions, credibility/reliability divergence, borrowed-credibility transfer, and sleeper decay all carry unchanged. Beyond communication the cross-domain reach is strong but travels as the parent mechanism: a perception-mediated multi-dimensional weighting, a composition of trust, signaling, reputation, and legitimacy. Law, medicine, advertising, and religion re-codify it in their own terms; "source credibility" is its persuasion-research instance.

Parents (1) — more general patterns this builds on
-
Source Credibility is a decomposition of Trust Prime
Source Credibility is the persuasion-research framing of Trust in which vulnerability is accepting and acting on a communicator's message under incomplete verification.
Children (4) — more specific cases that build on this
-
Beat Reporting Domain-specific is part of Source Credibility
Beat reporting contains source-credibility weighting because the reporter must continuously judge which named, background, and quiet sources merit uptake for which claims.
-
Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect Domain-specific is part of Source Credibility
Source Credibility is the state variable the Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect fails to revise when a checkable article exposes errors in the source's process.
-
Opinion Leader Domain-specific presupposes Source Credibility
Opinion Leadership presupposes Source Credibility because receivers must weight the broker's retransmission as endorsed judgment rather than relay.
-
Peripheral Route Processing Domain-specific is part of, typical Source Credibility
Peripheral-route processing commonly contains source-credibility weighting as an expertise, trustworthiness, or goodwill cue, but can instead ride message length, attractiveness, familiarity, or affect.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Source Credibility sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (40th percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
