Status Quo Bias¶
Model the systematic over-choosing of whatever option is framed as current — the same two alternatives chosen at different rates depending only on which is the default — as a content-independent departure surcharge built from loss aversion, regret aversion, and decision cost.
Core Idea¶
Status quo bias (Samuelson & Zeckhauser 1988) is the tendency to prefer the current state to any change, giving it an advantage unexplained by its merits. Its operationalisation is precise: when the same two alternatives are framed with one as the default, the current-labelled option is chosen at higher rates than under neutral framing, so the bias arises from framing, not content. Three mechanisms contribute — loss aversion, regret aversion, and decision cost — combining into a departure surcharge against any alternative.
Scope of Application¶
Lives wherever an agent with framing-sensitive, loss-averse evaluation treats a current state as reference point.

Clarity¶
Naming status quo bias dissolves the assumption that "doing nothing" is a neutral baseline: the current state is itself a chosen option carrying a silent departure surcharge. Its operational sharpness — the same options chosen at different rates by label alone — converts vague suspicion of conservatism into a measurable gap between neutral-baseline and default-privileged preference. That surfaces a hazard, that any default-framed elicitation contaminates its own measurement, and turns default design into a substantive lever.
Manages Complexity¶
Across organ donation, retirement, subscriptions, mergers, and constitutions, an observer confronts what looks like a different psychology each time. The bias compresses that to one regularity — a departure surcharge read off a single design fact, the default label — decomposing into three scalar mechanisms rather than an open list of motives. The decisive compression forces a branch: because the surcharge is content-independent, every preference splits into neutral-baseline versus default-privileged, and the bias is exactly their difference.
